Now hiring part‑time Deputy Sheriffs (Day shift) for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. Applicants must currently hold a valid Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification to serve in the Confinement Division on day shift.
- Schedule: 40 hours per pay period – five 8‑hour shifts (7 a.m.–3 p.m.) with every other weekend and two weekday shifts per cycle.
- Training: Selected candidates attend a 4‑week Deputy School (unless already certified in Civil, Court, and Jail operations) followed by a structured Field Training Program.
- Supervise inmate activities, maintain order, discipline and security.
- Take appropriate action in emergency situations per riot, hostage, fire and disaster plans.
- Escort prisoners to and from courts and the Adult Detention Center.
- Process inmates in and out of the Adult Detention Center and oversee their handling and security of inmate property.
- Transport inmates by vehicle and maintain accurate and current files on all supply transactions and office equipment repair.
- Perform routine law enforcement duties as required (e.g., traffic enforcement, accident response and investigation, criminal investigations).
- Maintain complete and accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports.
High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education.
Required Certificates and Licenses- Valid motor vehicle driver’s license at the time of appointment.
- Current certification as a Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer.
- U.S. citizen.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation, polygraph examination and psychological examination.
- Obtain a Class “A” medical rating in the assigned medical group before appointment.
- Non‑smoker at the time of appointment and sign a Condition of Employment Agreement to refrain from smoking, both on and off duty.
- Work a shift schedule which includes evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Shift hours and assignments may be changed at the discretion of the Sheriff.

Applicant must successfully complete a background investigation to include a polygraph, psychological and medical exam, and serve an initial probationary period of twelve months commencing upon graduation from the appropriate training academy.
