This is professional work planning, organizing and supervising a variety of cultural arts activities in the City of Fairfax and coordinating and implementing marketing and public relations initiatives to increase visitation and travel to the City of Fairfax. Serves as the staff representative to the Commission on the Arts and serves as staff liaison to boards and commissions. Responsible for short-term planning and long-term planning aimed at increasing marketing and public relations outreach on a regional and national level.
Work involves establishing goals and objectives; planning and developing programs and special events. Independent judgment and initiative must be used in directing the various segments of the programs and in interpreting the needs and desires of the public. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation and is reviewed through conferences and reports.
Acts as a staff liaison and attends Commission on the Arts and boards and commission meetings.
Supports the Steering Committee and functional committees in the planning, coordinating and executing of boards and commissions programs and activities.
Drafts correspondence and reports including budget reports and annual reports.
Coordinates with City of Fairfax staff as appropriate for board and commissions activities.
Monitors distribution and timely return of grant applications and distribute grant applications to Commission members.
Contracts for Old Town Hall Performance Series and other events.
Coordinates financial and budget activities for the Commission on the Arts and boards and commissions.
Maintains a high level of communication among area museums, galleries, arts education programs, and other regional and national partners.
Develops, reviews and implements, as needed, a strategic plan to enhance placemaking and increase visitation to the City through public art and cultural art initiatives.
Establishes and maintains relationships among regional and national Cultural Arts organizations that would prove beneficial to the advancement of the City of Fairfax cultural arts activities.
Manages relationships with City Arts Commission and Mason Arts organizations including Fall for the Book, Virginia Opera, Potomac Arts Academy and other regional, Metro DC and State arts organizations.
Plans, produces and oversees boards and commission activities, performances and advertising campaigns; manage bookings and creates content for the Annual Festival; reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Steering Committee.

Plans and produces Old Town Hall Performance Series, Summer Plaza Series, and in conjunction with City of Fairfax Band creates and produces the Summer Band Series in Old Town and Veterans Amphitheater.
Coordinates all financial and budget activities the Cultural Arts Division of the Parks and Recreation Department.
Monitors distribution, timely return and reporting of Commission grant applications.
Manage Sponsor ships, State Grant funding and applications and actively seek new sponsor ships and partnership opportunities.
As this position is within the Parks and Recreation Department assisting with large community events is expected with Fall Festival and the Fourth of July being required work days.
Performs related work as assigned.

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Arts Administration or closely related field; or a Master's Degree in Business, Public Administration, Arts Administration or closely related field.
Requires five years’ experience in arts administration, curation, recreation, non-profit management, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of administration and supervision of cultural arts activities and public relations initiatives.
- Ability to administer non-profit funds, in coordination with the Treasurer of the Commission and boards and commissions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the public.
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Ability to use various computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and graphics.
Requires a CPRP, Certified Parks & Recreation Professional certification.
