Job Announcement

This position is primarily responsible for the administration, production, tracking, and placement of the County's public hearing sign boards that notify the public of upcoming land use and zoning public hearings before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors (BOS), Planning Commission (PC), and Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA). Ensures compliance with state law, county ordinances, and public notification requirements by coordinating the production, installation, inspection, maintenance, documentation, and removal of public hearing signs throughout Fairfax County.

Also provides support to the staff of the Board of Zoning Appeals including new application distribution, public meeting preparation and set up, and attendance at BZA meetings. This position requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines while working both independently and collaboratively.

Note:

The salary for this position will not exceed the midpoint of the advertised salary range.

Illustrative Duties

Performs technical duties (e.g., comparing plats against tax maps, tracking zoning cases through GIS, interpreting plats to locate properties in partial applications) involving the application of paraprofessional planning skills and techniques;

Generates GIS-based locator maps for zoning staff reports, including outlining of all application properties;

Performs varied and moderately difficult technical work (e.g., compiling land use data, develops visual planning tools for evaluation of properties, researching zoning or planning files for property history) in gathering, compiling, and analyzing data;

Assembles complete application packages for accepted applications and distributes to various County staff, elected and appointed officials;

Prints, assembles, and distributes all staff reports and addenda to the Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors, and the Board of Zoning Appeals;

Performs varied and moderately technical work (scanning, merging data between computer programs, indexing, etc.) related to digitization of zoning records;

Enters information into related computer systems (e.g. the Land Development System - LDS);

Maintains appropriate log books and files of related/ assigned work;

Prepares and posts (and pulls) all public hearing signs for the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Planning Commission, and the Board of Supervisors;

Provides support to staff at task force meetings, public hearings and other related meetings;

Provides support to staff on related planning or zoning projects, providing research, filing, computer support and statistical analysis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus two years of non-professional planning or zoning related work, as defined by the area to which assigned.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

REQUIRED:

Valid driver's license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Experience working with land development, zoning, planning, permitting, or local government operations.

* Experience providing customer service in a government or regulatory environment.

* Experience managing inventory and maintaining electronic records.

* Experience using PLUS and generating distribution to internal and external recipients.

* Knowledge of reading and creating maps, route planning, and logistics.

* Knowledge of Fairfax County roadways and neighborhoods.

* Knowledge of the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance, Code of Virginia, and regulations in relevant areas.

* Proficiency using Microsoft Office software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Employee will be required to lift boxes of staff reports and applications and wooden posting signs weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to operate a van and post public hearing signs at properties throughout the county. Ability to produce maps for reports on a GIS-based system;

access, input and retrieve information from the computer. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
