Legislative Aide for Delegate Dan Helmer, Virginia House of Delegates

Dan Helmer's Legislative Aide serves as his lead staff member in the Virginia House of Delegates, managing constituent casework, legislative research, and communications for the 10th District. This is a strong fit for someone early-to-mid career in politics or public policy who wants substantive, hands-on experience in a state legislature.

Position Overview

Serves as the lead staff member for a state delegate, providing administrative, research, and constituent service support to facilitate the delegate's policy goals and constituent representation.

Responsibilities
  • Manage office communications, including answering phone calls, responding to emails, and sorting mail
  • Conduct research on policy issues and pending legislation
  • Draft correspondence, speeches, talking points, and press releases
  • Coordinate the delegate's schedule: arrange meetings with constituents and stakeholders; evaluate and prioritize invitations; and make sure the delegate attends key meetings and community events
  • Represent the delegate at community events and meetings when necessary
  • Prepare memos for meetings with constituents, stakeholders and advocacy groups
  • Track legislation through the committee process and legislative session, working with stakeholders and acting as liaison with other members’ offices
  • Manage constituent casework, including working with state and local agencies, lobbyists and any needed group
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local officials
  • Maintain a tracker of any press relating to the work of the delegate and/or his legislation
  • Support the legislative intern program
  • Prepare and send newsletters and constituent outreach materials
  • Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Research and analytical capabilities
  • Knowledge of the legislative process and state government structure
  • Proficiency with standard office software and database management
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Discretion and judgment in handling confidential information
  • Political awareness and understanding of district issues
  • Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work
  • Hybrid while out of session
  • In-person, 45 days to 60 days in Richmond for Legislative sessions in January through February or March and occasional travel to Richmond outside of session
