Network Engineer

Requirements

• 3-5+ years of hands‑on routing/switching experience (CCNA level) – configuration, implementation, and maintenance/troubleshooting.
• Leadership/mentoring experience – will oversee two junior‑mid level engineers.
• Strong network monitoring skills (Nagios preferred; Solar Winds acceptable).
• Firewall experience – Cisco FTDs in the environment.

This role will directly support the network/systems environment for VDOT's Traffic Operations Center (TOC) in Northern Virginia. The TOC provides 24/7/365 operations and supports IoT devices on the roadways to provide situational awareness, support district leadership & traffic operations SMEs, support travel/incident management, manage district/corridor operational technology services, coordinate break‑fix, and assist with service restoration.

• Assist with configuration and deployment of new/replacement network hardware and communications infrastructure.
• Maintain up‑to‑date project and architecture documentation.
• Maintain up‑to‑date inventory and maintenance records.
• Monitor network resources for faults and traffic anomalies.
• Resolve connection issues between users and resources.
• Maintain detailed change history of network changes.
• Support ITS Field Maintenance with communications implementation and troubleshooting.
• Support team efforts to improve cybersecurity controls and defenses.
• Support team efforts for threat hunting and mitigation.
• Manage time and resource constraints.

• 5+ years of experience with Routing Protocols (BGP, OSPF, etc).
• 5+ years of experience with VLAN management.
• 5+ years of experience with subnetting.
• 5+ years of experience with firewall administration.
• 5+ years of experience with VPN & remote access technologies.
• 5+ years of experience with network monitoring.
• Intermediate level experience.

Contract position based out of Fairfax, VA.

Hybrid position in Fairfax, VA.

$40.00 – $60.00 per hour.
