About the Role
The Operating Room Nurse provides patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice with the policies, values, and mission of the organization. Monitors and manages the patient and operative environment during surgery to maintain a safe environment, optimize outcomes, and maximize available resources.
Location & Compensation- Department: 10071 Northern Virginia Clinics
- Pay Range: $36.11 - $63.99
- Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
- Serves as the communication liaison to patients, families, and members of the operating team.
- Prepares the operation room for the patient and the surgical procedure, assembling equipment and supplies.
- Delivers perioperative patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence based care.
- Utilizes outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions.
- Participates in quality improvement activities and uses quality measures to understand individual and unit performance.
- Provides direct guidance and oversight of the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that behaviours adhere to documentation standards, standards of care, and policies and procedures.
- Participates in unit shared governance initiatives to improve patient care and throughput as determined by leadership.
- Documents in the EMR to support patient care.
- Works within scope of practice and delegates according to Nurse Practice Act.
- Actively participates in Universal Protocol and timeout and the fire risk assessment.
- Completes post‑procedure pause and verifies safety protocols.
- Identifies and corrects instrument count discrepancies.
- Verifies medication information with sterile field, surgeon, and anesthesia provider.
- Communicates observations or concerns related to unsafe situations that pose risk to patients, families, or the healthcare team.
- Stops in the face of uncertainty and validates information needed for decision making.
- Assists the surgical team with emergency situations.
- Arrives on time, handles difficult situations, and complies with departmental policies.
- Participates in staff meetings and completes mandatory education and training.
- Minimum Education: Associate’s Degree from an approved school of nursing (required);
Bachelor’s Degree, BSN (preferred). - Minimum
Work Experience:
2 years of operating room experience; 2 years in at least two specialties (Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Orthopedics‑Spine, General Surgery, Colorectal, ENT, Da Vinci Robotic, Kidney transplant). - Required Skills/Knowledge: 1 year of pediatric OR experience preferred; proficiency in at least three services (General Surgery, Colorectal, Kidney Transplant, ENT, Orthopedics/Orthopedic‑Spine, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Urology/Da Vinci‑Robotic, Plastic, Oral Maxillofacial, GI); basic computer skills; adaptability, building partnerships, collaboration, communication, diversity and inclusion, decision making, managing relationships, and managing work.
- Licenses &
Certifications:
Registered Nurse licensed in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia;
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS). Certified Nurse OR (CNOR) preferred.
