Security Officer III

Job Description

Security Officer III – Full‑time evening shift (3:30 p.m. – 12 a.m.) with shift differential for weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Protects hospital properties, provides a safe environment for the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI), and supports facility operations.

• Patrol grounds and buildings to maintain security and address safety concerns.
• Respond to behavioral emergencies and escort individuals during special hospitalizations.
• Patrol nursing units every 15 minutes.
• Process electronic fingerprinting and monitor equipment temperatures.
• Respond to alarms and support emergency management programs.
• Transport individuals and assist the switchboard/reception as needed.
• Write reports, follow written and oral instructions, and use Microsoft products.
• Maintain effective working relationships using interpersonal skills.
• Work mandatory overtime as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Experience in a security/safety position.
• Current state motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Experience with MS Office.
• High school graduate or equivalent.

• Experience with diverse populations, including mental health and intellectual disabilities.
• Prior law enforcement experience.
• Experience in report writing.
