Field Testing Technician II (Crew Lead/In House Training) – Fairfax, Virginia

Intertek is actively seeking a Field Testing Technician Level II to join our Field Testing team in Fairfax, Virginia. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a versatile career in the building enclosure testing industry.

What are we looking for?

The Field Technician will support the Building and Construction business by leading a crew, managing own projects, and performing field testing. We look for experienced individuals in the construction or testing industry; on‑the‑job training is provided. This position offers growth and development within the department and company. Some basic project management and leadership skills are preferred. Company vehicles are provided for travel to and from job sites.

This job requires travel most weeks (overnight and/or locally) Monday through Friday.

Shift / Schedule

Monday – Friday with travel most weeks. 1st shift with occasional projects requiring 2nd shift. Employees are paid for all travel time.

What you’ll do
  • Lead field testing projects, collect data, and write reports
  • Set up testing, including rough carpentry work to construct test chambers
  • Operate equipment in the interior of buildings and work with customers while testing occurs
  • Operate high‑reach lift equipment (boom lifts, supported and suspended scaffolding)
  • Assist with forensic investigations of building envelope failures (isolation work on exterior)
  • Communicate with clients and project team regarding site observations and test preparation on all projects assigned
  • Provide project planning upon arrival for needed elements such as water, electricity, and access by communicating with clients and team
  • Travel with overnight stays (company covers all travel expenses and per diem)
  • Perform physical work relevant to areas of responsibility as assigned

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience in commercial construction, building envelope, or fenestration
  • Ability to learn the building envelope, including wall cladding systems, curtain wall, window and door systems, waterproofing, roofing, etc., and their installation methods
  • Working knowledge of test methods and standards associated with testing of these systems or the ability to learn and comprehend these standards
  • Aptitude for working independently and leading a crew on assigned projects
  • Technical competency and ability to communicate effectively with customers and co‑workers, both in writing and orally
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain good rapport with clients and subcontractors
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to meet changing priorities and strict deadlines
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Office & Outlook
  • Ability to work from ladders, boom‑lifts, roof levels, etc.
  • Routinely lift a minimum of 50 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, bend, crawl, push and pull as needed
  • Willingness to travel (locally and/or overnight) 75% of the time or more
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
Preferred Requirements
  • Associate’s degree or higher preferred (related field preferred)
