Position

Summary

The Vocational Counselor provides individualized employment services to veterans and individuals with disabilities throughout Fairfax and surrounding communities. This field-based position combines career counseling, vocational assessment, job development, employer engagement, job coaching, and employment support to help individuals obtain and maintain meaningful, competitive employment. You'll work directly with individuals, employers, families, and community partners to create employment opportunities and support long-term success.

What

You'll DoCareer Planning & Counseling
  • Identify individuals' strengths, interests, skills, abilities, and employment goals.
  • Develop individualized employment plans based on each person's needs and career objectives.
  • Provide career exploration and job readiness support.
  • Assist with resume development, job applications, interview preparation, and workplace readiness.
  • Help individuals build confidence and develop skills needed for successful employment.
Employment & Job Coaching
  • Assist individuals in identifying and obtaining competitive employment opportunities.
  • Provide individualized job coaching and workplace support.
  • Support individuals during onboarding and the early stages of employment.
  • Monitor employment progress and provide follow-up services to promote job retention.
  • Help individuals develop workplace skills and natural supports.
Employer & Community Engagement
  • Build and maintain relationships with local employers.
  • Identify employment opportunities that match individuals' skills and interests.
  • Educate employers about inclusive hiring practices and reasonable workplace accommodations.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, referral agencies, families, and support teams.
  • Serve as a professional liaison between individuals and employers.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate case notes, employment records, and service documentation.
  • Track individual progress toward employment goals and outcomes.
  • Follow program requirements, funding guidelines, and company policies.
  • Manage an assigned caseload while meeting documentation and service deadlines.

Required
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple individuals, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently in a community-based environment.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the service area.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screenings.
Preferred

Experience in one or more of the following is a plus:

  • Vocational rehabilitation
  • Supported employment
  • Employment services or job coaching
  • Workforce development
  • Disability services
  • Human services
  • Case management
  • Career counseling
  • Community-based services
  • Employer engagement or job development
  • Working with veterans

Certifications such as ACRE, CESP, WIP-C, or CRC are preferred but not required.

Transferable Experience Is Welcome

You don't have to come from a traditional vocational rehabilitation background to succeed in this role.
