Overview
Operates various types of heavy equipment and trucks performing maintenance and repair work on streets. Operates other miscellaneous tools and equipment as required by the specific tasks including a John Deere backhoe, John Deere Mini Excavator, Leeboy 8510 paver, a vibratory roller and a Bobcat with a planer attachment. Performs a variety of semiskilled and labor tasks, routine vehicle maintenance, and all other duties as assigned.
Must be able to supervise a work crew during specific assignments.
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment and small equipment.
- Review work orders to determine nature and location of work; load necessary materials and equipment.
- Assist Assistant Crew Supervisor in leading crew and setting up jobs with parts, tools, signs, etc.; ensure work zone is set up to VDOT specifications and regulations.
- Assist in the loading and unloading of materials and equipment transported to the work site.
- Inspect and act as lead worker for contractors doing work for the City.
- Ensure utility tickets are cleared prior to any excavations.
- Assist other departments in scheduled and emergency operations and all other requested work within safe operation of the equipment.
- Enforce safety regulations and work standards in the operation of equipment.
- Conduct routine minor maintenance of vehicles/equipment; ensure vehicles and equipment are neat, clean and orderly.
- Conduct snow and ice removal of assigned area; clear assigned area of debris.
- Review procedures and documentation such as vehicle manuals and maintenance manuals to ensure work is performed correctly.
- Respond to emergencies outside the normal workday, including snow removal duties.
- Work overtime as needed.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- Three to five years of experience with heavy equipment or closely related experience.
- Minimum of two years of experience in construction and maintenance, including dump truck driving.
- Good driving record and knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in vehicle operation.
- High School graduation or GED equivalent.
- Valid Class A CDL with endorsements for air brakes, combination, and tank trucks.
- May require additional certifications based on assigned area.
Hours:
Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Selected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire (paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year). Selected candidates with an active CDL learner’s permit will receive a $1,000 bonus upon hire (paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
