Bilingual, Customer Service Rep
Position Overview
The Customer Service classification is used in the Financial Management, Health, Planning & Building, Public Works, Long Beach Gas & Oil, and Water Departments. Currently, there are ten (10) vacancies in the Financial Management Department and one (1) vacancy in the Health Department.
DutiesUnder general supervision, performs tasks associated with the billing and collection of fees for City services, licenses, permits, and parking citations; interacts with customers and/or City departments by telephone, mail or in-person regarding account, permit, license, and citation transactions and problems; enters and accesses account transaction information via personal computer; performs routine clerical tasks; receives, opens and routes mail; obtains information from field personnel;
receives payments, makes change and issues receipts; initiates billing for City services and/or accounts; performs collection efforts on delinquent accounts; maintains utility meter and refuse records and accounts; initiates Small Claims Court actions; maintains daily balances of revolving funds; issues licenses, refunds, notices and other related documents and information; operates personal computers, mail opening machines, remittance processors, money counting machines, electronic cash registers and related equipment;
may operate radio dispatch equipment; may perform meter re‑reads; and performs other related duties as required.
- Equivalent to six months or more of full‑time paid experience in recent clerical, cashiering, meter reading, data entry or customer service or related training.
- Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
- Skill in the operation of office equipment including data entry.
- Ability to exercise tact, judgment and patience in assisting the public and client departments.
Successful candidates will be required to pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment.
Proof of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required. If a driver’s license is required, a current DMV driving record must be submitted at the time of selection interview.
Some positions require willingness to work any one of three shifts between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and positions in the Towing Operations Division require willingness to work various shifts, including split shifts, holidays and weekends consisting of eight hours scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight.
Desirable Qualifications- Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian) speaking ability.
- Use of personal computers.
- Previous bank teller training.
- In‑person and/or telephone/call center customer service experience.

* Paid Parental Leave – after six (6) months of City employment; up to 30 calendar days (160 hours/192 hours for sworn platoon) of PPL, taken in full‑day increments, in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of seventeen (17).
