Position: Biology (Cell & Molecular) Instructor (FT)

Overview

The candidate will participate with departmental colleagues in developing and expanding the curriculum in cell and molecular biology and other fields for course delivery on the Fairfield campus, the Vacaville Center, and the Vallejo Center. The successful candidate will work collegially with faculty and staff in the department and the District. Assignments may include primary teaching responsibilities at various District locations, for day or evening courses.

The ability to use and expand the use of technology and active learning strategies in the classroom and laboratory is also expected. Teaching duties will include face-to-face instruction. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning.

We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in-person the week of March
6. Second round interviews are tentatively set for early April. All dates are subject to change.

Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in one or more areas of biology, primarily cell and molecular biology.
  • Safety is a priority at Solano Community College, and the successful candidate will be expected to know, follow, implement and enforce all safety rules and standards of the department.
  • Build the cell and molecular portion of the Biology program as well as the Biotechnology, and Biomanufacturing degrees and certificates.
  • Develop, review, and maintain currency of curriculum for the cell and molecular course in collaboration with other instructors as well as the articulation officer.
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established program course outlines of record; inform/advise students about program requirements; evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance; prepare and grade assignments and examinations; meet administrative timelines and submit completed reports and required documents; and maintain required student attendance, scholastic records, and other related materials.
  • Work in collaboration with other full-time instructors of the Biology Department in coordinating curriculum and mentoring adjunct faculty in these courses.
  • Support Department and division goals by participating in program review such as curriculum and program development, revision, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assist in recruiting students and promoting the Biology Program and the Biotechnology Program through participation in college-sponsored events, student clubs, and educational and industry outreach.
  • Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLO) and Program Level Outcomes(PLO).
  • Actively participate in department/school meetings and maintain regular office hours in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies; participate in college governance and decision-making.
  • Use technology in the academic environment to enhance student learning.
  • Use equitable teaching practices to create a positive learning environment conducive to learning.
  • Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance.
  • Maintain current knowledge and skills in the area of assignment.
  • Maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend hours, and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.
