Position Overview
The Automation Controls Technician is responsible for maintaining instrumentation, control systems, and electronic communications in support of plant production, quality, GMP, and safety goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and a background in fixing electromechanical systems, providing production efficiency and performance metrics for entire production lines. Responsibilities include implementing process/production monitoring and product quality controls, including network integration and SCADA interface, on new and existing production systems.
The technician will provide technical guidance and assistance in troubleshooting, operating, and maintaining control systems, including hardware and software. Working as part of a team, the technician will offer technical knowledge and guidance for designated interface groups, and will carry out installation, diagnostics, repair, and ensure the reliability of industrial control systems and equipment.
- Follow all plant and department-specific safety rules, procedures, and programs; wear all required personal protective equipment for all plant, department, and task-specific requirements.
- Support and maintain the Automation systems.
- Modify and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, etc. (Allen Bradley preferred).
- Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, equipment, and components.
- Work directly with plant personnel on SCADA implementation and controls systems design.
- Develop and maintain documentation for system architecture and interfacing.
- Plan, schedule, install, monitor, configure, troubleshoot, repair, backup, and upgrade production environment.
- Support Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs and identify improvement opportunities.
- Assist with new equipment installations and system upgrades.
- Ensure safety compliance with policies like lockout/tagout (LOTO) and confined space entry.
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and electrical hazards.
- Ensure all maintenance personnel are properly trained and aware of potential safety and health risks.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and seven to ten years of relevant maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment (prior experience with plastic manufacturing technology strongly preferred).
- Proven record with industrial communication and PLC messaging.
- Experience in a 24/7 high-volume manufacturing environment desired.
- Knowledge of SCADA, PLCs, HMI, Drives, Network Switches/Routers, and Radio communication devices.
- Strong knowledge of plastic equipment maintenance preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and interpret technical diagrams and procedures; strong mathematical skills.
- High degree of organizational skills.
- Experience practicing advanced methods in the application of PLC, motion controls, and SCADA systems.
- Strong project and time management skills and ability to complete projects promptly within budget.
- Strong troubleshooting skills; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
