Correctional Officer (Entry)
This is an entry level class in the Correctional Officer series in which incumbents learn to perform a variety of tasks to supervise and control inmates in a detention facility. Incumbents are responsible for supervising the mentally disturbed, sick, injured, and non English speaking inmates/prisoners accused or convicted the full range of violations and crimes. Assignments are rotated among Floor Officer, Control Room Officer positions.
This class is distinguished from Correctional Officer in that the latter is fully qualified journey level and works more independently.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.
Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Positions allocated to this class may require bilingual skills.
Candidates for positions in this class will be required to pass a background investigation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy. A Peace Officer Standard & Training (POST) background investigation is required prior to the start of employment. During the investigation, the following circumstances may require further investigation:
- Deceptive, deceitful, or uncooperative during any portion of the Personal History Investigation.
- Felony Conviction (Ever)
- Misdemeanor Conviction (Within the last 3 years)
- Conviction (Ever):
- Theft
- Indecent Exposure
- Annoying Children
- Resisting Arrest
- Perjury
- Fraud
- Domestic Violence
- Currently on Probation
- Terminated or allowed to resign in lieu of termination from employment (multiple times)
- Delinquent or in arrears of court-ordered child support payments
- Delinquent in financial obligations (looked at on a case-by-case basis)
- Willfully and deliberately falsifying or providing misleading information regarding prior or current drug use.
