Machinist III – CNC Machining
The Machinist II sets up and operates CNC machining centers to produce precision components according to written instructions, blueprints, and specifications. This role supports daily production by ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to quality standards while also contributing to workflow coordination and providing guidance to less experienced team members.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate CNC machines and equipment to manufacture parts according to job instructions, blueprints, and work orders.
- Perform machining operations using appropriate fixtures, tooling, and CNC programs to achieve required dimensions and finishes.
- Run previously set up jobs independently and monitor production to maintain consistency, accuracy, and quality.
- Inspect parts during and after production using precision measuring tools to ensure they meet required specifications.
- Use micrometers, calipers, and other inspection tools to verify dimensions and maintain quality standards.
- Perform visual inspections and quality checks in accordance with established procedures and GMP standards where applicable.
- Maintain accurate documentation of work performed and ensure all tasks are completed correctly within assigned work areas.
- Perform basic machine adjustments and troubleshoot minor issues during production to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with team members and support staff to meet production goals and improve workflow within the machining area.
- Provide direction and guidance to helpers or entry-level team members as needed to support team performance.
- Record and document work performed each day, including using pass-down communication (such as email) to supervisors when working off shifts.
- Follow written lab request instructions and communicate any discrepancies or non-conformances to the supervisor and/or quality engineer.
- Apply strong data integrity practices when recording and reporting production or inspection data, including use of Microsoft Excel workbooks and Microsoft Access.
- Use FIFO (first in, first out) principles to self-schedule assignments and manage workload effectively.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety and housekeeping standards.
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures while working around machinery and in a manufacturing environment.
Essential
Skills:
- Minimum of 3+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience setting up and operating CNC equipment to produce precision components.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions, blueprints, work orders, and lab request documentation.
- Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
- Ability to perform accurate measurements and basic shop math.
- Proficiency using precision inspection tools such as micrometers and calipers.
- Experience with quality inspection, quality control, and visual inspection practices.
- Basic computer skills and ability to work with production systems.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a production environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills &
Qualifications:
- Experience working in a manufacturing or machine shop setting.
- Familiarity with composite materials, including carbon fiber and fiberglass composites.
- Knowledge of time and temperature-sensitive (TATS) materials.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel workbooks and Microsoft Access to record and report data.
- Ability to follow and interpret written lab request instructions.
- Experience communicating discrepancies or non-conformances to supervisors and quality engineers.
- Strong ethic regarding data integrity and accurate recordkeeping.
- Experience applying FIFO (first in, first out) principles for self-scheduling assignments.
- Familiarity with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environments or standards.
