The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of all aspects of health and safety programs at facility and supports Group and Divisional efforts as needed. Responsible for the overall plant safety program strategic direction and tactical response actions. Primary contact for environmental compliance and any associated issues. Oversee management of Chemical Control program to minimize introduction of hazardous chemicals into the environment with emphasis on use of less severe chemical options.
Safety Administration
- Maintain Safety Management System to include coordination, implementation, and reviews of all programs with the goal to improve safety, promote “ownership” of safety by all employees, and foster a proactive safety culture.
- Facilitate all required safety audits.
- Monitor safety by conducting daily walk-throughs of all production areas and buildings; report any findings to area managers.
- Attend daily Production meetings and report on:
- Any relevant health and safety issues
- Findings from daily safety audits
- Schedule and facilitate monthly Safety Committee meetings.
- Coordinate Industrial Hygiene-related testing and monitor efforts to ensure compliance with regulations and standards and a safe work environment.
- Initiate, manage, and promote safety incentive programs.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) with up-to-date and accurate information and report any changes to necessary personnel.
- Conduct a full investigation into all incidents, including injuries (recordable or not), illnesses, near misses, property damage, first aids, fire starts, and hazard reports.
- Investigations should include statements from the reporter and witnesses, root cause findings, and corrective actions.
- Collect reports and deliver them to Senior Leadership and other appropriate managers for sign-off and agreement of action plans for correction and communication to the facility and Division/Group as required.
- Take definitive actions to prevent future incidents of a similar nature.
- Verify safety accident details with third-party administrators.
Reporting & Recordkeeping
- Ensure reporting is completed at the required intervals.
- Maintain incident and recordkeeping systems so they are always up to date.
- Maintain the OSHA 300 Log, including annual submission/posting and updates as needed when an incident occurs.
- Maintain divisional recordkeeping systems and the injury database in Excel and the EIQ system to ensure monthly Group KPIs are up to date.
Employee Training
- Create and lead New Hire/Initial Safety and Environmental Training to ensure compliance with facility's Safety and Environmental Programs.
- Create, schedule, and present Annual Safety and Environmental Training for all employees at the required frequency to comply with OSHA, EPA, OEPA, NFPA, etc.
- Ensure specialty training is created, purchased, or scheduled at the frequency required by the applicable program or legislation, including but not limited to:
- Arc flash
- Confined space
- Electrical
- First Aid/AED
- Fall protection/working at height
- Manage and train employees on the Emergency Action and Business Continuity Plan.
- Conduct regular drills and annual refresher training.
- Conduct CMT training for managers and leadership.
- Ensure all Safety Committee members, Supervisors, and Managers receive investigation training at the required frequency.
- Ensure all team members receive annual training on plant procedures for incidents.
Health Administration
- Coordinate and facilitate various annual insurance initiatives.
- Promote drug-free workplace initiatives and policies.
- Coordinate annual CPR/First Aid/AED training, fire extinguisher training, and employee hearing tests.
- Maintain Environmental Management System to include coordination, implementation, and reviews of all programs, permits, and plans.
- Ensure compliance with all EPA-related regulations and standards and all associated reporting and filing requirements.
- Verify all aspects of the plant’s reports, permits, and plans remain up to date at all times, including but not limited to:
- SWPPP
- SPCC
- Water Testing Log
Food Safety
- Follow and enforce GMP and all Food Safety policies.
