THE POSITION

Deputy Sheriff’s provide services and protection to the public through performance of law‑enforcement duties. Incumbents are responsible for enforcing laws and preventing crime.

Assignments include patrol, investigations, marine patrol, coroner’s office, civil, resident deputy, SWAT, CNT, arson investigations, MFF, HAZMAT response, and specialty instruction.

Scheduling options include (5) 8‑hour shifts, (4) 10‑hour shifts, and (3–4) 12‑hour shifts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Patrol an assigned geographical area, observe activities, initiate traffic stops, make visual vehicle inspections, respond to emergencies and reports of crimes in progress, interview persons to obtain information, investigate complaints, make arrests, and issue citations.

Patrol County waterways in a boat, navigate tidal waterways, assist boaters/swimmers, investigate suspicious activity, assist accident victims, conduct searches for bodies and property, search for missing persons, maintain an orderly vessel, transport boats on trailers, coordinate activities with other agencies, and provide boating safety information to the public.

Research and maintain records, write reports, testify in court, answer inquiries from attorneys, other officials and the public, and use automated systems for records research and maintenance.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

One (1) year of recent law‑enforcement experience.
Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate.

DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS

A Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate is required for this position. All candidates must submit a copy of their Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate by the final filing date. Candidates who fail to submit by the final filing date will be disqualified from the recruitment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least nineteen (19) years of age at the time of application.
Must possess a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license is required; a valid Class B may be required depending on assignment.
Incumbent must be able to work in a noisy and stressful environment, lift objects weighing more than 100 pounds, and perform a full range of body movements.
Incumbents must be able to work any shift, holidays, weekends, and anywhere in the County.
Candidates may be required to pass a background investigation and drug/alcohol testing as required by applicable law.
Incumbents must meet training requirements in accordance with Penal Code 832.

VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS

Applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty, received an honorable discharge, and submit a DD‑214 by the final filing date. Disabled veterans may receive additional preference points.
