The City of Fairfield is accepting applications for one (1) Building Inspector Senior position within the Community Development Department’s Building Safety Division, with the flexibility to appoint at the Building Inspector III level based on qualifications.

Mission

The mission of the Community Development Department is to expand Fairfield's economic and environmental development, enhance the community's physical image, and preserve its historical assets.

The Building Inspector Senior role is critical to this effort, inspecting buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration and repair; assisting in the review of building plans and specifications for permit issuance; enforcing building (residential and commercial), plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy, green building and zoning codes and laws; and assisting in the issuance of permits and collection of fees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration and repair.
  • Assist in the review of building plans and specifications for permit issuance.
  • Enforce building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy, green building and zoning codes and laws.
  • Assist in the issuance of permits and collection of fees.
  • Perform related functions as required.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outside and may include exposure to construction noise, heights, potential electrical shock, and construction machinery. May include exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, and hazardous chemicals. At times, work may include reviewing plans at a desk and covering front counter duties.

Physical Demands

• Transporting light to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

• Reaching, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, stooping, prolonged periods of standing; walking on uneven surfaces, stepping over trenches, walking on roofs up to 8/12 pitch; climbing ladders and scaffolding two to four stories in height; using a computer keyboard/tablet for data input and typing reports.

• Ability to see well enough to read gauges, manufacturers' labels and fine print on plans; depth perception to climb ladders and walk on roofs and multi-level framing; ability to distinguish colors to determine correct wiring.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Senior Building Inspector is the advanced journey level classification in the Building Inspector series. This position differs from the I, II & III positions in that it performs the most complex inspections in addition to providing guidance, oversight, and training to the rest of the inspection staff. Incumbents should be able to perform inspections independently and turn to external resources for additional guidance.

Supervision

Received and Exercised

Receives supervision from the Building Inspector Supervisor or Chief Building Official. Provides guidance, lead direction, and oversight to building inspection staff (Levels I, II & III).

Experience
  • Senior level:
    Six (6) full‑time years of building inspection experience with a public agency, with 3 years equivalent to a Building Inspector III with the City of Fairfield, inspecting all major trade fields (carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing).
  • General series:
    Four (4) full‑time years of building inspection experience with a public agency inspecting all major trade fields (carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) is required, or eight (8) full‑time years of responsible and relevant journey‑level experience in one of the major trade fields or a wide variety of building trades work.
  • Associate's degree in building construction/Inspection Technology may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
