Irrigation Technician – Fairfield, CA
Position OverviewThe Irrigation Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems across assigned job sites. This role requires strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, efficiency, and quality standards.
QualificationsEducation
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Irrigation certification (e.g., IA Certified Irrigation Technician) preferred or ability to obtain
- Additional training in irrigation systems, landscaping, or related field is a plus
Experience
- 3–5 years of hands‑on experience in irrigation installation, maintenance, and repair
- Experience working with commercial landscape irrigation systems preferred
- Proven ability to troubleshoot irrigation systems, electrical components, and controllers
- Experience reading and interpreting irrigation plans and specifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record (required)
- Irrigation certification (preferred or required within a specified timeframe)
Specialized Skills & Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, including valves, controllers, and sprinkler components
- Proficiency in irrigation wiring, troubleshooting, and fault detection
- Understanding of PVC pipe types (class vs. schedule) and proper applications
- Ability to program and operate irrigation controllers (Rain Master experience preferred)
- Basic electrical knowledge for controller diagnostics and minor repairs
- Knowledge of water management principles (GPM, GPH, CCF, distribution uniformity, etc.)
- Understanding of hydrozones (sun/shade, slope, soil, and plant requirements)
- Ability to identify plant stress and irrigation‑related issues
- Skilled in safe operation of tools and equipment (trenchers, drills, jackhammers, tampers)
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office or similar systems)
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and follow verbal and written instructions
Irrigation Operations
- Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems including pipes, valves, and controllers
- Troubleshoot electrical and hydraulic irrigation issues
- Perform mainline repairs up to 3" pipe
- Adjust and position sprinklers for optimal coverage and efficiency
- Program and operate irrigation controllers and remote systems
- Conduct system audits, diagnostics, and performance checks
- Create as‑built drawings, site maps, and work orders
Field Execution & Safety
- Report to work on time and in proper uniform with required PPE
- Load, unload, and maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment
- Safely operate all tools and machinery required for irrigation work
- Inspect equipment prior to use and report issues immediately
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, incidents, or injuries
- Lead or support small crews (1–2 team members) as needed
- Train and mentor junior technicians
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members
Administrative Duties
- Accurately complete daily timecards and job documentation
- Maintain detailed work orders and service records
- Prepare materials lists for upcoming jobs
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Perform repetitive physical tasks including bending, kneeling, lifting, and standing for extended periods
