Position: SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR (SEASONAL)

Job Summary

This class is accountable for communicating with staff/parents, for providing individualized support for campers, adapting activities, ensuring safety and assisting with fostering inclusion to provide an enriching camp experience.

Supervision

Receives administrative direction from Recreation Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors, the Director of Recreation and Parks, or their designee.

Supervision Exercised:
May supervise or lead lower-level staff as assigned.

Examples of Essential Duties
  • Supervises, organizes and participates in daily activities with a group of children at the school site and while off site on any trips or scheduled activities.
  • Assists with general operation and maintenance of facilities and grounds to ensure a safe and secure place.
  • Assists in maintaining accurate records on campers, emergencies, and behavior issues for all children, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance for follow up and documentation when needed.
  • Assist in daily set up and clean-up of camp activities.
  • Ensures that all campers, camp staff and parents follow rules and policies on site.
  • Responsible for ensuring all recreation programs are run in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitors camper behavior, safety, and well-being, responding appropriately to any challenges.
  • Communicates effectively with parents/guardians and camp staff about camper progress, needs, and concerns.
  • Performs routine maintenance, care and use of equipment and camp supplies.
  • Undertakes proper emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Actively facilitate resolutions between campers during disputes.
  • Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings, training programs and in-service training as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness of all facilities that the program uses for its operation.
  • Performs all related tasks as required or as directed.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, children (individually and in large groups) and their family members, and the general public.
  • Solid observational skills and the ability to make behavioral assessments.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise, direct, instruct, and solicit cooperation from others in the performance of their daily work assignments and duties.
  • Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Must be able to follow directions, schedules, be organized, and interact well with other counselors, supervisors, parents, and children.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with campers, counselors, and camp directors.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and children's needs.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement, discretion and to provide leadership.
  • Ability to answer inquiries, resolve complaints, and communicate with the public in an effective, tactful courteous, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrates creativity, ability to motivate children, positive attitude.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must by 16 years or older at time of employment.
  • Applicant must be or willing to obtain CPR/first aid certification and able to administer First Aid (employer will provide the training).
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing/planning needs.
  • Previous experience working with children and/or in municipal recreation or group recreation strongly preferred.
Work Schedule
  • Must be available Monday – Friday, June 15 to July 31
  • 8:45AM – 3:15PM, (Hours may vary due to field trips or before/after camp scheduling).
Working Conditions, Physical and Mental Requirements

Employees appointed to positions in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.

While executing the duties of this job, the work the employee carries out may be performed in outside environmental conditions such as extreme heat, constant sun, wind and rain. Employee is subject to noise which requires shouting in order to be heard above the sound of surf and crowd conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and /or humid conditions.
