This position provides individual, small group and large group instruction to students based on children’s individual developmental level; ages 2-5 years old. This position works in collaboration with parents to assist children in reaching their full potential. This position develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This position develops, implements, and monitors the students’ Individualized Education Programs in collaboration with parents and other IEP Team members.
This position promotes a collaborative relationship with school staff and parents that will foster inclusionary practices.

Essential Functions- Assumes the responsibilities of a special education teacher.
- Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), plans curriculum, develops individualized lesson plans and prepares instructional materials that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students, considering the Virginia Standards of Learning, local requirements, and physical, emotional, and academic levels of development.
- Instructs students in all areas specified by the IEP.
- Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques, i.e., hands‑on, student interaction, lecture, group work, etc., to present instructional content to the students.
- Plans, integrates, and utilizes technology for classroom instruction.
- Utilizes assistive technology and specialized equipment.
- Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to students for all learning activities.
- Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with IEP using a variety of positive behavioral supports.
- Participates in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
- Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for purposes of evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education.
- Participates in staff, department and special education committee meetings and training as required.
- Maintains a system of record keeping and data collection following required procedures as outlined in the Special Education Procedural Guidance Manual.
- Assists children with proper health training and self‑help activities, such as eating, dressing and personal hygiene.
- Participates in specialized staff development activities to improve job related skills and apply “Best practices” in working with students with disabilities.
- Plans and delivers specialized instruction within early childhood special education classroom. Collaborates with related service providers and other staff to assess program effectiveness, recommend and implement instructional strategies, ensure required accommodations and/or modifications are provided, align instruction with early learning standards, and monitor and evaluate each student’s educational progress.
- Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistant(s) and/or other staff.
- Plans, schedules, implements, and supervises the daily program, which emphasizes appropriate developmental experiences for preschool children.
- Supervises the outdoor and indoor play areas in such a way that children’s safety can be easily monitored and ensured.
