Job Description
Fairfield College Preparatory School, a Jesuit Catholic high school located on the campus of Fairfield University, is seeking an energetic and passionate educator for a part‑time, academic‑year position as a Choral Music Instructor in the Visual & Performing Arts Department.
Responsibilities- Teach two choir sections per semester—upperclassmen (≈30 singers) and freshmen (≈25 singers)—under the guidance of the Music Director, including instruction of singing technique, notation, reading, and listening; employ iPads for instruction and feedback; assess progress and provide aligned feedback.
- Develop engaging, standards‑based lesson plans and rehearsal strategies; differentiate instruction for diverse musical skill levels; collaborate with the VPA Department Chair, Director of Music, and other faculty to coordinate rehearsal schedules and performance logistics.
- Communicate professionally with students and families regarding rehearsals, performances, and expectations; collaborate with the Campus Ministry to facilitate on‑campus Masses and liturgical needs.
- Program and support combined choir performances, coordinating two annual concerts and approximately 10‑12 performances per year (Masses, concerts, school events, etc.); oversee choir leadership at liturgies and community events; participate in department meetings, school‑wide professional development, and the Ignatian Educator Formation Program.
- Select repertoire, coordinate music purchases with the Director of Music, manage performance space needs, and support student recruitment and retention in the music program.
- Coordinate travel and trip planning support for off‑site performances and assist with CMEA, Regional, and All‑State event support.
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum two years of experience teaching vocal music in a high‑school or middle‑school setting.
- Proficiency in teaching and conducting diverse vocal styles with musical excellence and pedagogical care.
- Strong musicianship skills in vocal performance and piano.
- Excellent classroom management skills with both small and large groups.
- Experience selecting diverse, appropriate, and engaging repertoire.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with Jesuit or Catholic educational philosophy (highly desirable).
- Willingness to support the school’s mission through spiritual, co‑curricular, and community activities.
