The Role:

The Supervisory Clinician oversees clinical operations and staff within the outpatient psychiatric admissions unit. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, fosters trauma-informed and inclusive care practices, and supports evidence‑informed decision‑making to enhance the quality and accessibility of behavioral health services. The position requires advanced leadership capabilities, strong clinical acumen, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams in high‑acuity environments.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Oversee and as necessary, provide direct supervision to clinical and administrative personnel involved in psychiatric intake and admissions.
  • Provide direct supervision to the Unit Coordinator.
  • Lead day‑to‑day operations to ensure timely and accurate client assessments including assessments of risk, documentation, and triage.
  • Monitor staffing needs, adjust assignments, and manage workflow to maintain operational efficiency and prevent burnout.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across departments to support coordinated patient care.
  • Implement staff training initiatives grounded in trauma‑informed care and evidence‑based practices.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, HIPAA).
  • Conduct staff evaluations, coach team members, and manage performance issues in alignment with HR standards.
  • Apply clinical data and patient outcome metrics to inform unit performance, care protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage patients and families with sensitivity and professionalism, upholding the institution’s commitment to patient‑centered care.

DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self‑sufficiency in those we serve.

Southwest Connecticut Mental Health System (SWCMHS) is responsible for the oversight and management of contracts with private not‑for‑profit agencies and residential providers providing mental health services in the southwest region of the state. With locations in Bridgeport and Stamford, SWCMHS provides inpatient, outpatient and assertive community treatment (ACT) services and community support services for adults with severe behavioral health disabilities; mental health services for people who are deaf or hearing impaired and a mobile crisis intervention team.

SWCMHS also provides outreach to people who are homeless and mentally ill. Special agency programs include Shelter Plus Care, a housing program for people who are homeless and who have a history of substance abuse or mental illness or who have AIDS.

A comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of professional health care experience in a psychiatric setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at a lead level responsible for coordinating the work of a unit or team of professionals in a psychiatric setting.

NOTE:

For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of an Advanced Clinical Social Worker for social work discipline, Head Nurse for the nursing discipline, an Advanced Professional Counselor and an Advanced Marital and Family Therapist.
