Sign Language Interpreter – Papillion La Vista Community Schools School YearDescription:
The Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) supports deaf and hard of hearing students by facilitating clear and effective communication among students, peers, teachers, and school staff. This role involves interpreting classroom instruction, meetings, and school activities while also reinforcing lessons. Additionally providing tutoring when needed. The interpreter collaborates with teachers and specialists to implement IEP accommodations, assists with orientations about deafness and sign language, and helps ensure the functional use of hearing devices.
When not actively interpreting, the SLI may provide general classroom assistance or instructional support. The position requires professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Work hours may occasionally include evenings or weekends to support school-related activities.
- Education:
Minimum of an Associate’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting - Certification:
Candidate must receive a passing score on the EIPA written exam, and attain and maintain one or more of the following competency levels as defined in Nebraska State Statute, Rule 51: - E.I.P.A- 4.0 or above
- Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf Certification (RID)
- National Association of the Deaf (NAD)- Competency level 4.0 or above
- National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
- Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST)-Competency level 4.0
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency with American Sign Language, Signed Exact English, and/or other sign language systems, preferred.
- Experience:
Experience as an SLI preferred, not required - Hourly rate starting at $28.00 – $35.00. Experience and Education will determine rate.
