This internship supports Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwater fish research in Alaska, with a primary focus on helping with sample preparation, data collection, and analysis and management of fisheries and ecological data. The intern will support a diversity of projects such as preparing data collection equipment, analyzing fisheries datasets (e.g., otolith measurements and chemistry, environmental and spatial data) to support research on fish ecology and habitat use in rapidly changing Arctic to support TWS conservation priorities.

The internship will be focused on data processing, analysis, and visualization, with field involvement possible, which could include floating rivers and collecting water samples. The position provides hands-on experience in applied fisheries science and conservation research.

• Organize, clean, and quality-check fisheries and environmental datasets.
• Assist with fish and water sample preparation.
• Assist with statistical and exploratory analyses using R statistical program
• Support spatial analyses and mapping of fish and habitat data.
• Develop figures, maps, and summary outputs for reports and presentations.
• Maintain data documentation and metadata following best practices.
• Conduct literature reviews related to Arctic freshwater fisheries, development and climate impacts.
• Assist with lotic field collection and fish habitat assessments.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by TWS (including, but not limited to, finance, human resources and legal) to maintain a compliant and efficient work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Current undergraduate or graduate student in fisheries, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Experience or coursework in data analysis using R and excel or interest to learn
• Familiarity and interest in working with ecological or biological datasets
• Basic experience or familiarity with GIS or spatial data analysis.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.
• Ability and interest to spend time working on Alaska rivers.
