Position: Maintainer I Tree Division

Job Summary

This classification is accountable for performing a certain level of semi-skilled and skilled manual work in the Tree Division of Public Works. Work includes custodial work, grounds maintenance, tree work, mechanical repair and alteration work, and driving. Work is performed under supervision and in accordance with standard practices, codes and skills, and OSHA-required safety protocols.

  • Drives, loads and unloads designated trucks with trailers and/or attachments (such as skid steers); may be required to operate chainsaw, pole saw, pruner, leaf blower, and brush chipper.
  • Performs general maintenance, mechanical, construction, and tree grounds work.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of designated equipment; gathering of tools, equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as requested, including those of lower classifications.
  • Performs semi- and skilled trades work based on level.
  • Prepares truck or equipment for operation by performing routine safety check before and after operating equipment.
  • May be assigned on the job training under the supervision of a higher classified employee.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge,

Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize standard tools, materials, methods and practices of manual work in a specific line of work, including operating equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of and ability to acquire skills in tree felling and pruning.
  • Knowledge of roping, rigging, and knots related to tree care.
  • Knowledge of and ability to acquire skills to operate necessary equipment through on the job training.
  • Some knowledge of trades work.
  • Ability to acquire skills to operate increasingly complex equipment through on the job and/or external training.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods, sometimes under unfavorable or extreme weather conditions including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; may also require lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of materials.
  • Ability to perform in a courteous and professional manner amongst staff and the public on a daily basis
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to safety protocols
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions and directives.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communication styles.
Minimum Qualifications

For Maintainer I:

  • Graduation from High School or GED and any combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties listed above.
  • Two (2) years of experience in each of the lower-level Maintainer or comparable position with any combination of grounds maintenance, tree work, and driving.
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
  • Incumbents must also be certified in the following:
    Electric Hazard Awareness, Aerial Lift/Rescue, Chainsaw/Chipper Safety, First Aid/CPR, and Road Flagger Training.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to overtime for emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
