The Outreach Specialist will work within a team to engage, assess, and support unhoused people in encampments, interim housing, and those who have been recently housed. We utilize trauma-informed practices to provide intensive case management services and crisis intervention. This position will work with unhoused people and also specifically with people living in RVs, campers, and trailers. Knowledge about these vehicles is not required.
This position will collaborate with various organizations to ensure appropriate service connections are obtained and provide follow-up referral/service tracking to individuals experiencing homeless.
MUST have own car, valid California Driver License and be able to drive to various locations throughout workday. Mileage is paid for all travel required between office and other locations. Work locations are within West Los Angeles.
SUMMARY OF THE ORGANIZATIONWVHY provides services to unhoused people in encampments, interim housing, and people transitioning to permanent housing in West Los Angeles. WVHY mainly outreaches to participants living in RVs, Trailers, and Campers. We believe that housing is a human right, and we are invested in compassionate and innovative solutions that we know are effective in supporting unhoused people. We believe that an individualized and holistic approach that combines a continuum of housing options enriched with supportive services is the most effective means of supporting unhoused people.
Our community-based approach allows us to address the issues unhoused people experience in the San Fernando Valley.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIESThe Outreach Specialist will work within a team to engage, assess, and support unhoused people in encampments, interim housing, and recently housed. SPECIFIC DUTIESProvides mobile, field-based, outreach to unhoused people living on the streets, in encampments, interim housing, and people transitioning to permanent housing. WVHY connects unhoused participants to mental health services, health services, housing services, and other supportive services for which they are eligible.
We work alongside unhoused people to engage in outreach services and associated community referrals that promote well‑being by building rapport and providing emotional support to participants. Works collaboratively with other outreach entities in the community.
Provides crisis prevention, crisis intervention, and de‑escalation services as needed. Provides ongoing street-based housing focused case management services utilizing a Harm Reduction and Housing First approach. Provides follow‑up services to ensure that referrals are completed; provide advocacy as needed. Maintains thorough and accurate records in both written form and through assigned electronic database. Attends various, regular staff, agency and community meetings as designated by supervisor.
Drives personal vehicle in and around Los Angeles County. Additional tasks, projects, and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Demonstrated knowledge of issues facing program participants (e.g. health, substance abuse, mental health, domestic abuse, trauma, immigration, legal)
Ability to demonstrate empathy and a non‑judgmental attitude when engaging with unhoused people. Possess a high level of tolerance and understanding for individuals who present for services with mental health and physical health needs. Ability to be flexible and work in an environment subject to ongoing change. Availability to work after hours for crisis calls and/or disaster response. Knowledge of community social service agencies and resources.
