Lifeguards at Camp Watitoh play a key role in creating fun and engaging experiences for campers. Lifeguards start and end their day with the campers in their cabin, but during program time, they lead swim instruction and actively guard at the waterfront. This dynamic leads to not only building a relationship with the campers in their own bunk, but gives lifeguards the opportunity to get to know each and every camper throughout the summer.
Lifeguards are responsible for the preparation of age specific lesson plans for their age group’s swim instruction, engaging campers and staff during their sessions, maintaining their program area’s equipment, and communicating needs of their program area – such as new equipment or maintenance needs – to Waterfront Director.
The ideal lifeguard has completed at least one year of college or the equivalent there-of, is dedicated to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for campers and staff, and can implement fun and creative activities at their program area to keep everyone engaged through the summer. They work in collaboration with their co-counselors, who are general counselors, during non-program times on ensuring the emotional and physical well being of the campers in their bunk.
All bunk counselors are “OD” (on duty) two to three times a week ing these nights counselors are assigned a bunk (sometimes their own) to get campers ready for bed, ensure they are getting to sleep at an age appropriate time, and are safe.

Expectations of Waterfront Staff membersAn exceptional standard of professionalism is required from Waterfront Staff members at all times. The safety, education, enjoyment and aspirations of Campers is the paramount responsibility of all Counselors employed to work on the Camp Watitoh Waterfront.
Serving as a member of the Waterfront Staff is a demanding and highly responsible position.
Waterfront Staff are therefore employed for their professional abilities as well as for their perceived ability to perform the duties required of them at the Waterfront and in their cabins to a consistently high standard.
While an active lifeguard certification is not required, as we will have lifeguard training at camp, extensive swimming experience is required and experience as a lifeguard is preferred.
