The Transportation Operations Specialist oversees the daily operation of Fairfield Public Schools' transportation program and crossing guard services to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective transportation of students. This position serves as a liaison with First Student Bus Company and is responsible for supporting transportation operations, student transportation concerns, safety compliance, budget oversight, performance monitoring, and the supervision of approximately 20 School Crossing Guards.
Responsibilities- Supports the Transportation Supervisor in overseeing the daily transportation operations.
- Supervise, evaluate, train, and schedule School Crossing Guards, including attendance monitoring, payroll submission, and time-off management.
- Monitor transportation and crossing guard performance and implement operational improvements to enhance efficiency and service quality.
- Ensure compliance with Connecticut school transportation laws and regulations, including required school bus emergency evacuation drills.
- Respond to school bus accidents, transportation emergencies, service disruptions, and incidents occurring at crossing guard locations.
- Serve as the primary district liaison with First Student Bus Company and address operational concerns, service issues, and contract compliance matters.
- Investigate and resolve transportation- and crossing guard-related complaints and concerns from students, parents, and school staff.
- Conduct administrative investigations involving student conduct on school buses and incidents occurring within school crossing zones.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare weekly reports tracking bus lateness, service interruptions, operational trends, and performance metrics.
- Assist in the development and management of the transportation budget and ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Develop and implement accountability systems to monitor employees, vendor, and operational performance.
- Collaborate with school administrators, transportation providers, municipal agencies, and community stakeholders to ensure safe and reliable transportation services.
- Bachelor's degree in public administration, Business Administration, Education, Transportation Management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of supervisory or management experience.
- Experience conducting administrative investigations.
- Experience in budget development, fiscal management, and resource allocation.
- Demonstrated success in improving operational efficiency and implementing accountability systems.
- Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in data management, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office applications, Advanced Excel, and Microsoft Data.
All other duties assigned by Executive Director of Operations or Designee.
Salary range $65,000 – $75,000 depending on experience.
