Job Description

Do you like to work outdoors? Our Bridges & Structures Bureau (BSB) is hiring a full‑time Bridge Inspector 1 to inspect bridges for the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. You will work in a team environment that values teamwork, customer service, and a positive attitude.

Location:

Fairfield, IA. Shift: Monday through Thursday, 6:45 am to 5:15 pm. Travel:
At least occasional overnight travel.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare for and participate in bridge inspections.
  • Determine the condition of bridge components, identifying deficiencies using visual and audio techniques and equipment such as magnetic particle and dye‑penetrating tests, hand grinding tools, calipers, incremental bores, pachometers, and electronic depth finders.
  • Measure dimensions, angles, and distances using tools such as transit, level, surveyor chain, level rod, and tape, and record measurements.
  • Prepare sketches and take photographs with digital cameras.
  • Document inspection findings in SIIMS by completing bridge inspection reports. Convey field conditions in photographs and sketches in accordance with National Bridge Inventory codes and AASHTO Bridge Element condition states.
Additional Requirements
  • Successfully complete a comprehensive bridge inspection training course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards within the timeframe set by the appointing authority.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Undergo a post‑offer pre‑employment physical to verify ability to perform duties.
  • Complete required Fall Protection training.
  • Be able to lift and load items up to 65 pounds.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Associate’s degree in civil or construction engineering technology and at least one year of full‑time experience in engineering survey, bridge safety inspection, or related work, or
  • Three years of education and/or full‑time experience, where 30 semester hours of college coursework equal one year of experience, or
  • Two years of continuous full‑time state‑executive work in engineering survey, bridge safety inspection, or related duties.
Additional Qualification Requirements
  • Completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved bridge inspection training course.
  • Maintain a minimum valid Class C non‑commercial driver’s license.
  • Designated positions require a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit and later a Class A commercial driver’s license with required endorsements.
  • Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and participate in the random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Be prepared to travel, including overnight, and arrange transport to assigned work areas.
  • Remain within 30 minutes driving time of assigned location.
  • Respond to emergencies and may work up to 16 consecutive hours.
