A Continuous Improvement (CI) Engineer in a fastener manufacturing environment focuses on eliminating waste, reducing variation in high-volume production, and optimizing tooling lifespans. They act as the bridge between the shop floor and management, translating data into actionable, cost-saving solutions Essential characteristics and competencies for this role include:
1. Fastener-Specific Technical Knowledge
* Metal Forming Expertise:
Understanding of CNC Swiss screw machining, knowledge of threads major/minor diameter, and heat treating processes.
* Tooling & Die Management:
Focus on maximizing tool life and utilizing methodologies like SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) to minimize setup and changeover times.
* Dimensional & Quality Control:
Ability to utilize and implement SPC (Statistical Process Control) to monitor critical dimensions (e.g., thread pitch diameter, tensile strength, torque limits). 2. Core Methodologies & Analytical Skills
* Lean & Six Sigma Mastery:
Proficiency in root cause analysis, value stream mapping, process mapping, 5S, and DMAIC methodologies.
* Data-Driven Decision Making:
Relies on data analysis tools (such as Minitab or ERP system data) rather than assumptions to drive improvements.
* Mistake-Proofing (Poka-Yoke):
Designing physical or automated mechanisms to prevent defects-critical for safety-critical fasteners in the automotive or aerospace industries.
3. Soft Skills & Change Management
* Shop Floor Empathy:
The ability to listen to machine operators and setup technicians to identify process bottlenecks and physical frustrations.
* Cross-Functional Leadership:
Skill in leading diverse teams (maintenance, quality, supply chain, and production) without direct authority.
* Change Agent Presence:
Possesses the diplomacy and resilience required to drive a "zero-defect" culture and achieve operator buy-in. 4. Continuous Improvement Tools To succeed, a CI Engineer utilizes a specific set of standard tools to standardize work and sustain progress.
* Standard Work:
Creating clear, repeatable, and visual instructions for operators.
* OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness):
Monitoring and analyzing availability, performance, and quality of heading machines and secondary operation equipment. Must have experience as an Engineer in a CNC environment SNC Swiss machining experience would be a plus Must be willing to travel to 8 different locations in the US.
