The City of Fairfield Civil Service Commission is announcing an open competitive exam to establish an Eligibility List for the position of Clerk I in Records with the Police Department.
The exam will be conducted on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at:

The scope of the written exam will be multiple-choice questions, covering general clerical skills: language skills – including grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation; customer service skills; and computer skills – including Microsoft Word and Excel. A passing score of 70% is required to be included on the Eligibility List. In the event of a tie score, priority in ranking is determined by the date and time the application is received.
NOTE: The current opening is for a Clerk I position in Records with the Police Department; however, the Eligibility List may be used in the future for Account Clerk I/Clerk I positions in any department throughout the City.

Starting Pay Rate: $23.79

Dana Kennedy Civil Service Commission Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of financial, business and accounting responsibilities in support of general bookkeeping, accounts payable, income tax processing or utility bill collection.
Police Records Clerk IThis position requires an in-depth background check due to the nature and location of the position (Police Department)
- Assists residents/individuals in-person, on the phone, and via email with questions and record requests
- Reviews reports for accuracy and inputs data accordingly
- Maintains records and other various documentation received
- This position works closely with multiple courts, legal counsel, and court administration throughout the county and surrounding areas
- Compile, package and enter various numerical and text data into a computerized system
- Collect monies
- Perform minor audits
- Process cash and credit card payments
- Establish new residential and commercial accounts for billing purposes
- Document customer payments
- Process purchase orders and requisitions
- Prepare financial transactions and make deposits
- Reconcile petty cash and other accounts
- Process mail, operate binding, folding, encoding and burster machines
- Prepare and process accurate and presentable documents
- Provide competent customer service
- Establish and maintain orderly and systematic hard copy files
- Prepare and process accurate and presentable documents
- Generate requisitions, cost estimates snd reports
- Compile numerical and alpha data into a spreadsheet or database system and generate reports
- Process mail
- Provide competent customer service
- Assist taxpayers in-person, on the phone and via email with questions, filing returns, and making payments
- Review local income tax returns for accuracy and inputs data accordingly
- Maintains records of returns, payments and other various documentations received
- Processes cash, check, and credit card payments and applies them to the taxpayer's account
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age; possess a High School Diploma/GED; successful completion of Civil Service exam; and if selected, successfully complete a post-offer medical exam and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications for Clerk I- Familiarity with current office practices, procedures and equipment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Knowledge of general clerical skills: spelling, grammar, punctuation, math, filing, and business and accounting terminology
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Effective communications skills
