The Lead Pharmacy Technician provides hands-on operational leadership to pharmacy technicians working in a fast-paced, rapidly growing compounding pharmacy. This position supports daily prescription processing, compounding preparation, production workflow, fulfillment, inventory control, quality compliance, and team performance.

The Lead Pharmacy Technician serves as the primary point of contact for technician workflow questions, shift coordination, training, issue escalation, and daily production priorities. This role works closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, customer service, quality, inventory, shipping, and operations leadership to ensure prescriptions are processed accurately, safely, compliantly, and on schedule.

The ideal candidate is an experienced pharmacy technician who demonstrates strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, attention to detail, urgency, and accountability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Team Leadership and Workflow Coordination
  • Lead the daily activities of pharmacy technicians across assigned work areas.
  • Assign technicians to workstations based on prescription volume, staffing, qualifications, workload, and operational priorities.
  • Conduct shift-start huddles to communicate daily goals, staffing assignments, safety concerns, quality expectations, and production priorities.
  • Monitor workload throughout the shift and reallocate resources as needed to prevent bottlenecks.
  • Provide real-time coaching, direction, and support to pharmacy technicians.
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for technician questions and operational issues.
  • Escalate clinical, quality, compliance, staffing, or safety concerns to the appropriate pharmacist or manager.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and a strong patient-focused culture.
  • Support leadership with attendance management, performance feedback, and corrective-action documentation as requested.
Prescription Processing and Production Support
  • Support prescription intake, data entry, order entry, insurance or payment processing, refill processing, and prescription preparation within the authorized technician scope.
  • Review prescription work queues and prioritize urgent, delayed, or time-sensitive orders.
  • Verify that required prescription information, patient information, prescriber information, formulas, labels, and supporting documentation are complete.
  • Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information and route it to a pharmacist for review.
  • Coordinate prescription movement through intake, pharmacist verification, labeling, fulfillment, and shipping.
  • Monitor aging prescriptions and take action to prevent avoidable delays.
  • Troubleshoot prescription and order issues in collaboration with pharmacists, customer service, and fulfillment teams.
  • Perform technician duties as needed to maintain workflow and meet production requirements.
Quality and Compliance
  • Ensure pharmacy technicians comply with applicable federal and state pharmacy regulations, company policies, standard operating procedures, and quality-system requirements.
  • Reinforce HIPAA, patient confidentiality, data integrity, and documentation standards.
  • Review technician work for completeness, accuracy, legibility, and compliance within the permitted scope of practice.
  • Identify and escalates dispensing errors, labeling errors, product complaints, adverse events, temperature excursions, damaged products, and potential quality events.
  • Assist with investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, and process-improvement initiatives.
  • Support internal audits, regulatory inspections, inventory audits, and quality reviews as requested.
  • Ensure expired, damaged, quarantined, recalled, or rejected materials are properly identified and segregated.
  • Maintain accurate training, cleaning, production, inventory, and equipment records as assigned.
  • Promote a culture in which employees stop work and elevate concerns when patient safety, product quality, or compliance may be at risk.
Training and Employee Development
  • Train and onboard new pharmacy technicians on pharmacy systems, workflows, equipment, documentation, safety requirements, and departmental procedures.
  • Maintain training checklists and communicate technician qualification status to management.
  • Observe employee performance and provide timely coaching and retraining.
  • Identify skill gaps and recommend additional training or development.
  • Assist with competency assessments and annual technician performance evaluations.
