Maintenance Worker/Laborer – City of Fairfield
Under general supervision, this role involves performing a variety of unskilled, semi‑skilled and skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of city facilities and equipment, streets, sewers, traffic control systems, parks, utilities, recreation areas and other city‑owned property.
Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, graders, backhoes, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, snowplows, pavement grinders, air hammers, chainsaws, paint or stripping machines and various other hand and power tools.
- Perform inspections and operate facilities and systems.
- Maintain and repair physical facilities, including water, sewer and irrigation pipelines, fire hydrants, machines and grounds; trim trees, shrubs and brush; spray chemicals as needed; paint, clean and lubricate pumps, motors and related equipment; perform rough carpentry and concrete work; paint buildings and facilities; and perform custodial duties as assigned.
- If assigned to the Public Works Department, operate snow and ice removal equipment, including after‑hours operations.
- Manually shovel and move road salt, dirt, snow, etc.; descend ladders into trenches or drywells or climb to elevated positions; and climb in and out of heavy equipment.
- Conduct work in all kinds of weather, working safely in confined spaces and dangerous situations such as flagging in heavy traffic, working in trenches, ditches and overflowing creeks; work with color‑coded maps and drawings.
- Interface with computer systems to enter data or prepare reports; maintain various programs and data on computers such as daily work logs and maintenance programs.
- Utilize manufacturers' instructions to accomplish tasks.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner and per applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work various shifts.
- Successful completion of a civil service exam.
- Must obtain a commercial driver’s license within the probationary period.
- One (1) year of related work experience.
- Familiarity with methods, materials and equipment used in these types of work.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Mechanical aptitude and general knowledge of use and care of hand tools and power equipment.
- Ability to operate large motor vehicles.
- Appreciation for hazards involved in construction and maintenance work.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints (preferred).
- Physical stamina required to perform the job duties and responsibilities.
Probationary Period: 12 months
Starting Pay Rate: $27.39
