Position: LIFEGUARD - PART TIME

Under the supervision of the Assistant Recreation Center Manager, the employee monitors swimming activities and enforces water safety rules and regulations; observes swimmers; rescues swimmers in distress; and administers first aid. The employee also performs routine cleaning and maintenance duties. Work is performed under supervision and is reviewed by the supervisor through discussions and observations. The employee answers inquiries and provides information pertaining to the aquatic facilities, schedules, and fees.

The employee assists in pool cleaning and maintenance; checks and adjusts chemical balance of pool water; keeps the pool deck and adjoining areas clean and free of potential hazards. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

This is a Part Time Position Scheduled To Work Up To 19 Hours Per Week which will include nights, weekends, and some holidays. The Fairhope Municipal Pool is open.

Monday - Friday, 5am-8pm

Saturday, 8am-6pm

Sunday, 12pm-6pm

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Lifeguard Activities
  • Posts and distributes information of aquatic center activities for the public.
  • Monitors patron behavior in and around the pool.
  • Enforces the safety, pool, and center rules with the public and patrons.
  • Maintains required certifications and credentials to include: lifeguard, automated external defibrillator (AED), cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer (CPR-PR) and first aid.
  • Identifies potential weather threats and monitors weather conditions to ensure safety; determines if lightning is present.
  • Monitors swimmers and visitors in the pool and surrounding pool areas.
  • Identifies distressed patrons and responds to emergency situations by performing rescue and emergency interventions, lifesaving procedures and first aid, or activating facility emergency protocols.
  • Ensures all safety and flotation devises and equipment are readily available and are in good working order.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor, patrons, and the general public.
  • Uses the computer and other office equipment to enter data regarding patron’s use of the pool facilities.
  • Represents the Department and City in a positive manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
Pool Operations
  • Opens and closes the pool area for patrons.
  • Monitors patrons signing in to use the pool and ensures an accurate maintenance of such lists.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Assists with pool parties and events held at the pool.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
Pool and Facility Maintenance
  • Maintains a safe and clean pool, pool deck, and facility environment; scrubs and clean the pool deck and surrounding areas; skims the pool from removal of debris; cleans the skimmer baskets; and utilizes the aquatic vacuum.
  • Performs tasks as required, utilizing established rules and guidelines.
  • Utilizes specialized equipment and conducts tests to verify safe chemical levels of the water.
  • Cleans and sanitizes pool after human contamination; closes and reopens pool when appropriate.
  • Performs and interprets water testing results; responds and treats the pool water as indicated, adding chemicals as needed.
  • Monitors stock levels of chemicals and notifies supervisor when supplies need to be reordered.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintains logs and records of water testing results and corrections.
  • Performs basic custodial duties to maintain clean restrooms and facilities.
  • Collects and empties trash.
Non-essential Functions
  • Possess the ability to read and write; with at least two (2) years of high school completed.
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  • Previous work experience with the general public and working in recreation programs is preferred; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
