OverviewNature of Work:
The position conducts complex professional work in a specialty area related to the acquisition, preservation, management and protection of the state’s environmental/natural resources. The primary responsibility is the operation of the Richard Mine Drainage AMD Treatment Plant located outside Morgantown, WV. Responsibilities include daily visits to ensure ongoing treatment, routine maintenance and cleaning, scheduling and overseeing maintenance contractors, maintaining records, scheduling deliveries of treatment materials, and tracking cost expenditures.
The incumbent will be on call during off-hours to address treatment system issues.
Office location: 1000 Technology Drive Suite 3220, Fairmont, WV 26554. One position will be filled with either title:
Environmental Resources Specialist 2 or related role. This position is classified exempt and does not fall under the classified service.

Note:
This position is part of the WVDEP AML program and may require related field work as described below.
- Assist with the operation, routine maintenance, and cleaning of AMD treatment facilities operated by WVDEP AML.
- Conduct and/or assist with field inspections and water sampling of AML sites, streams, and watersheds affected by AML activity.
- Maintain records of facility operations in approved repositories such as databases or AMLNet.
- Consult with AML Design, AML Planning, and outside vendors to assist in designing new water treatment facilities and improving existing ones.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle in hazardous and inclement weather conditions.
- May be required to handle hazardous and toxic chemicals.
- Must complete required Hazardous Materials Handling and/or HAZWOPER safety training.
- Must be physically capable of walking long distances over rugged terrain in adverse weather and carrying equipment for extended distances.
- Must pass a physical examination within the first six (6) months of employment.
- Be physically able to utilize respiratory protection.
- Must be comfortable with working alone in isolated locations.
- Must be flexible with daily schedule to accommodate special circumstances.
- Must be proficient in computer and mechanical skills.
- Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.
- Qualifying applicants may be required to complete an internet-based profile assessment to compare thinking, reasoning skills, behavioral traits and occupational interests against those important to the position.
- The recommended candidate will be subject to a search of their Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) prior to hire and annually thereafter.
- All new employees involved with DEP programs subject to the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMRCA) of 1977 must file, prior to final appointment and annually thereafter, a Statement of Employment and Financial Interest (OSM 23).
Minimum Qualifications
Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
OR
Substitution: Additional full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in the acquisition, preservation, protection and enhancement of environmental/natural resources, environmental protection or related area.
OR
Substitution: Graduate coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience at the rate of fifteen (15) semester hours for every one (1) year of experience.
Promotional Only:
One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Resources Specialist 1 may substitute for the required training and experience.
