Position: Security Officer 3

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years of experience in the security field
  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND one (1) year experience in the security field
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND six (6) months experience in the security field
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Obtain certification in BLS or Heart Saver First Aid within 60 days of hire date
  • State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable) as required for regulated areas
Departmental Certifications and Training
  • Obtain Defensive Tactics Certification
  • Complete ACT 235 training
  • Obtain OC Spray Certification
  • Obtain Baton Certification
  • Obtain Taser User Certification
  • Register with VA DCJS within six (6) months of hire and maintain registration
  • Successfully pass psychological evaluation
  • Complete training requirements for an armed security officer
  • Complete all departmental lethal weapon training and coursework
  • Receive handcuffing tactics training
  • Complete AVADE Training Levels I‑III
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy
  • One (1) year experience in a healthcare security environment
Core

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide information and directional assistance to all patients, visitors and staff.

Respond to all requests for information or assistance in a caring, courteous manner.

Provide physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access for patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities.

Monitor and maintain traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations.

Protect people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft and vandalism, in accordance with system and department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision.

Perform routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrols.

Make recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.

Report suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons, according to system and department policy and procedures.

Respond and provide assistance during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues, according to system and department policy and procedures.

Provide written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner.

Respond to and provide assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.

Perform patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and be capable of physical intervention when appropriate.

Operate hospital‑owned vehicles safely and responsibly, ensuring proper operating condition through vehicle inspections as outlined by departmental policy.

Other duties may include incident reporting, routine building rounds, incident investigation, crowd control, disaster response, domestic disputes, medical assistance, parking enforcement, consistent presence and visibility, helicopter assignments, media issues, victim assistance, traffic direction, policy enforcement, alarm investigation, duress response, physical intervention, tire changing, battery jumps, parking rounds, effective radio communication, escorts, accurate directions, loss prevention, vehicle assists, and STOPS training.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand and walk throughout entire shift(s).

Ability to lift, push or pull up to 80 pounds.

Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift(s).

Working Environment

Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions during duty.
