Description ofJob Duties and Responsibilities
The Student Security Officers division of the University Police Department is under the direction of the University Police Department and Chief of Police or designee. Student Securityofficers serve in a complementary role to our police officers are non-sworn civilian officers. They do not carry weapons, andhave not attended the West Virginia State Police Academy.
Student Security officers may provide initial support and thenquickly notify additional police and emergency staff, duringemergency situations.
Duties and Responsibilities- 1. Patrols assigned area on foot, to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
- 2. Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses University keys to open and close buildings; monitors closedbuildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
- 3. Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such asloitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
- 4. Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such aslockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
- 5. Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations;contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/orambulance personnel, as required.
- 6. Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/orpolicy code violators; observes suspicious persons and notifiespolice as appropriate; maintain observation until policearrive.
- 7. Performs periodic checks of exterior lighting and/or streetlights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
- 8. May provide safe and efficient passage to university employee sand/or visitors, as requested.
- 9. Provides traffic control and security related duties duringcampus events
- 10. Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas and/or parkinggarages to provide public security and assistance.
- 11. Maintains security controls for issued University keys;safeguards and controls issued University equipment.
- 12. Prepares routine, standardized reports.
- 13. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
- 14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- - No previous experience or minimum education required.
- - Possession of a valid driver’s license or state identificationcard is a requirement for this job.
- - Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

- - Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.
- - Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and inwriting.
- - Ability to complete routine paperwork.
- - Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- - Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
- - Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- - Skill in performing building security and lock procedures.
- - Knowledge of policies, and regulations.
- - Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes,regulations, and procedures.
- - Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
- - Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- - Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such asextreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors,and/or loud noises.
- - Moderate physical activity; requires handling of average-weightobjects and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
