Qualifications
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Social Service or related field
  • Hold or qualify for the WV Certificate in Social Services and Attendance
  • Knowledge of WV Attendance Laws
  • Knowledge of working with Attendance and Reporting Data / Truancy Diversion
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18‑5‑15c and/or 18A‑3‑2a, as appropriate
Performance Responsibilities Attendance Responsibilities
  • Assist Superintendent and all county administrators with activities related to school attendance.
  • Promote regular school attendance through written legal notice to parents of students in violation of compulsory attendance laws and Board policies.
  • Pursue legal avenues for violators by filing criminal complaints and juvenile petitions on habitually truant students as needed.
  • Assist in taking the school census provided by law.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of WV Attendance Law.
  • Cooperate with existing state and federal agencies charged.
  • Work cooperatively with personnel, parents, intercommunity agencies, and organizations.
  • Carry out all duties of Director of Attendance as directed by the WVDE and WV Code.
  • Coordinate resources for homeless students as needed.
  • Prepare monthly reports for Superintendent and Board detailing school enrollment, attendance, and drop‑out data.
  • Participate in community multi‑disciplinary team meetings to improve attendance through a community approach.
  • Perform other attendance related duties.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.
Truancy Diversion Intervention Duties
  • Intercede with students whose absences exceed five unexcused days but fewer than ten.
  • Investigate absences from school and report on actions taken.
  • Meet with the students and parents and attempt to remove barriers related to compliance with WV Code/county policy and to reestablish good attendance.
  • Prepare juvenile assessments utilizing a variety of student data including personal interviews, grades, teacher interviews, disciplinary records, and attendance history.
  • Work with students and families to facilitate academic progress, make home visits, and connect families with local/regional service agencies.
  • Attend parent conferences, team meetings, SAT meetings, and other meetings relating to school attendance or non‑school attendance when requested by parent, student, or school staff.
  • Work with the student to resolve unexcused absences and avert potential legal ramifications.
  • Act as an advocate for students and parents between the school and judicial system.
  • Create a Diversion Agreement that may include referrals to community services to address assessed needs; services for parents/guardians; and/or community work service programs.
  • Intervene to provide an alternative to legal action in the form of a Truancy Diversion Agreement when students reach 10 unexcused absences.
  • Monitor compliance with Diversion Agreements.
  • Meet with the student every 10 days and monthly thereafter until end of the school year.
  • Make regular reports to the Circuit Court and/or Prosecuting Attorney as required.
  • Make recommendations to the Circuit Court and/or Prosecuting Attorney as necessary.
  • Communicate regularly with school staff to establish cooperative and innovative approaches to solve truancy.
  • Assist school staff in supervising youth referred for truant behavior.
  • Foster communication to establish positive relationships between parents, students, staff, and others.
  • Work with WVDE transition specialists throughout the state to follow re‑entry of students from placement.
  • Devise, collect and maintain a system of data aggregation to ensure accurate reporting, maintain a daily log, and maintain a file of all diversion documentation for each identified student.
