Position: Elementary Library Media Specialists/Teacher Librarian (Fairview)

Library Media Specialist/Teacher Librarian

The library media specialist/teacher-librarian designs and executes a comprehensive school library program that is aligned with the school and district strategic plans as well as state and national school library and technology standards. As the library program administrator, the school librarian works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the policies and best practices of the school library program, and to guide and direct all activities related to it.

Qualifications:

  • Experience preferred:
    Prior job-related experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree. Media Specialist endorsement required or ability to enroll in program with district sponsorship for endorsement.
  • Appropriate endorsement and license through the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission, Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance, and valid driver's license and evidence of insurability.
  • Oregon Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check clearance.

Knowledge—an understanding of facts or principles related to a particular subject area

  • Understand adolescent development and apply knowledge to curriculum selection, use of instructional practices, and student learning needs
  • Understand and utilize skills/strategies for meeting the diverse need of students

  • Understand state education code and district policies

Skills—applied knowledge resulting from a development of abilities through formal training and practical experience.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Information & Technology Specialist/Manager

  • Operates and manages the Library Media Center and Textbook Room.
  • Prepares and administers the Library Media Center budget.
  • Proficient in the management of staff, budgets, equipment, and facilities, the library media specialist plans, executes, and evaluates the program to ensure its quality both at a general level and on a day-to-day basis.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all print and non-print materials for areas included with the assignment (i.e. the library, the faculty library, the textbook room, and the career center).
  • Maintains an efficient system for circulation, retrieval and storage of both hardware and software not under the responsibility of the technology assistant or district technology personnel.
  • Trains and supervises all Library Media Center staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties.
  • Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collection.
  • Maintains accurate records of the Library Media Center's holdings and determines statistics as needed.
  • Masters sophisticated electronic resources and maintains a constant focus on the nature, quality, and ethical use of information available in these and in more traditional tools.
  • Provides leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats; in bringing an awareness of information issues into collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, students, and others; and in modeling for students and others strategies for locating, accessing, and evaluating information within and beyond the library media center.
  • Establishes policies and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, and weeding of the materials collection (both print and digital) to ensure that it is culturally relevant, up to date, in excellent condition, and accessible to the school community.
