Job Summary

Transporting students safely to and from school and school‑related activities. Serving as a consistent, safe “face” for students and making a difference in a child’s life. Guaranteed 5 hours per day on a split shift (approximately 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Many drivers work 6–8 hours per day; additional hours are available if desired; may work during district breaks between routes.

Essential Job Functions
  • Safely drive a school bus on assigned routes in accordance with district policies, procedures, and state laws.
  • Assess potential emergency situations and take appropriate action to protect passenger wellbeing.
  • Supervise, assist, and instruct students and other passengers for safe loading and unloading during regular and emergency situations and at specific stops.
  • Assist special‑needs students with wheelchairs, safety vests, oxygen tanks, anger management, seizures, and other related concerns.
  • Conduct vehicle pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections as prescribed by law.
  • Report mechanical defects per district policies and state laws.
  • Provide a safe and nurturing environment on the bus.
  • Clean assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, to maintain appearance, sanitation, and safety.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Instruct students twice yearly on safe bus riding and evacuation procedures per OAR 581‑053‑0210(2).
  • Accurately complete forms and reports.
  • Comply with district policies, procedures, and state regulations regarding school bus operation.
  • Attend all required state, district, and department meetings and training.
Other Job Functions
  • Assist other personnel as required.
  • Add oil, coolant, and fuel to the assigned vehicle to maintain safe operating condition.
Performance Standards

Perform all assigned duties satisfactorily; work under direct supervision and independently using standardized routines; communicate effectively; comply with all district policies and procedures, including those in the Reynolds School District Transportation Handbook.

Qualifications
  • Experience:

    Three years of experience driving personal and/or commercial vehicles.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • State and district laws, rules, and regulations governing school bus operation, traffic safety, passenger loading/unloading, and student management.
  • Traffic signs and devices.
  • Safe motor vehicle driving techniques.
  • Use of communication devices such as radios.
  • Use of city and highway maps.

Ability to:

  • Operate large school buses safely and lawfully in varying weather, road, and traffic conditions.
  • Maintain decorum with students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Learn specific bus routes, complete scheduled routes on time, and adjust to schedule changes.
  • Operate buses for extended periods, including over‑the‑road special activity trips, in congested city streets, mountain, and rural roads.
  • Maintain a safe and appropriate atmosphere among students and report discipline issues.
  • Identify and report mechanical and safety equipment problems per district procedures.
  • Write legibly and produce clear, brief written and oral reports.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate licensure and certification.
  • Establish effective working relationships and communication skills with diverse individuals.
  • Speak, read, and comprehend English sufficiently for public interactions and official inquiries.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and Testing
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain licenses, certifications, and cards necessary for operating a school bus while on duty.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical examinations.
  • Maintain a driving record meeting or exceeding ODE and district standards.
