Job Summary: The job of “Type 10 Driver” is to improve student achievement by transporting students safely to and from school; ensuring the Type 10 vehicle is in safe operating condition; managing student behavior and enforcing rules, regulations and laws to ensure students safety during transport, loading and unloading.

Director of Transportation.

Essential Job Functions
  • Safely drive a Type 10 Personal Vehicle as assigned, on routes to and from school and school‑related activities, in accordance with District policies and procedures, and State laws.
  • Assess potential emergency situations to take appropriate action to protect the wellbeing of passengers.
  • Supervise, assist, and instruct students and other passengers for safe loading and unloading during regular and emergency situations, and at specific assigned stops.
  • Assist special‑needs students with issues including wheelchairs, safety vests, oxygen tanks, anger management, seizures, and other related concerns to protect the wellbeing of passengers.
  • Conduct vehicle pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections as prescribed by law.
  • Report vehicle mechanical defects according to District policies and State laws.
  • Provide students with a safe and nurturing environment in the vehicle.
  • Clean assigned vehicles, interior and exterior, to maintain appearance, sanitation, and safety.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Instruct students twice yearly on safe bus riding and evacuation procedures as required by OAR 581‑053‑0210(2).
  • Accurately complete forms and reports to provide written support and convey information.
  • Comply with District policies, procedures, and Oregon laws, rules, and regulations regarding the operation of a Type 10 vehicle.
  • Attend all required State, District, and Department meetings and training.
Other Job Functions
  • Assist other personnel as required to support completion of their work activities.
  • Add oil, coolant, and fuel to assigned vehicle to maintain safe operating condition.
Performance Standards

Perform all assigned job duties satisfactorily; work under direct supervision and independently using standardized routines; communicate effectively; and comply with all District policies including those in the Reynolds School District Transportation Handbook.

Qualifications

Experience

Required:

Three years of experience driving personal and/or commercial vehicles.

Skills, Knowledge, and/Ability Required Knowledge of
  • State and District laws, rules, and regulations governing Type 10 vehicle operation, traffic safety, passenger loading and unloading, and student management.
  • Traffic signs and devices.
  • Safe motor vehicle driving techniques.
  • Proper use of communication devices such as radios.
  • Use of GPS, city and highway maps.
Ability to
  • Operate the Type 10 vehicle safely and lawfully during varying weather, road, and traffic conditions, and recognize unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain relationships with students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Learn specific routes, complete scheduled routes timely, and adjust to changes.
  • Operate the vehicle for extended periods, including homes‑to‑school trips, in congested city streets and rural roadways.
  • Maintain a safe atmosphere among students and communicate discipline issues to administrators.
  • Recognize mechanical and safety equipment problems and report per District procedures.
  • Write legibly and make clear, brief, factual written and oral reports.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate licensure and certification.
  • Establish effective working relationships with a wide diversity of individuals.
  • Read, speak, and comprehend English sufficiently to converse with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to inquiries, and generate reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
Education Required

High school diploma or any combination of education and experience that provides required skills, knowledge, and ability.

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Testing Required
  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License.
  • Obtain Oregon Type 10 Passenger Driver Certificate within 2 weeks of hire.
