Staff Accountant – Nonprofit Organization (Temp to perm-4 month assignment then hired perm)

A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support day-to-day finance and accounting operations. This role works closely with senior financial leadership and assists with general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, financial reporting, journal entries, month-end close, cash activity, accounts payable, budgeting support, and data analysis.

The ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills, accuracy, and a collaborative mindset. This position plays an important role in maintaining reliable financial records, supporting timely reporting, and contributing to the overall financial health of the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support daily accounting functions and maintain accurate general ledger records
  • Perform bank reconciliations and assist with cash management activities
  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries
  • Assist with accounts payable processing and vendor-related activity
  • Monitor grant-related transactions and maintain supporting documentation
  • Complete account reconciliations, including balance sheet accounts
  • Assist with monthly and annual financial statement preparation
  • Support audit preparation by gathering schedules, documentation, and reports
  • Assist with annual budgeting activities and financial analysis
  • Process quarterly sales tax filings as needed
  • Help resolve accounting questions and discrepancies across departments
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures, workflows, and internal processes
  • Build positive working relationships with internal teams and external community partners
  • Participate in staff meetings and organizational initiatives
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and a strong commitment to the organization’s mission
  • Perform additional finance-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3–6 years of accounting or finance department experience
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel
  • Understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and departments
  • Strong organization, follow-through, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a service-minded approach
