POSITION TITLE:
Professional Tutor - Subject-Based (part-time)
DEPARTMENT: SSEM - TRiO Programs
PRIMARY

Fall River, MA
REPORTS TO:
Associate Vice President, Student Success
POSITION SATATUS:
This is a part-time, unit position without benefits, not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.
SALARY: $36.55 per hour.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Professional Tutor will offer direct tutoring services to students and will provide tutoring and supplemental instruction for first-generation, low-income, and students with a disability who participate in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The Professional Tutor will assist TRIO SSS and staff to promote retention and persistence for the participants by assisting students with overcoming obstacles in education and increasing confidence, skills, and ability in content areas.
When necessary, tutors will complete learning style inventories for students to understand how their learning style impacts their studies and coursework.
TRIO SSS is a federally funded grant, which supports first generation, low-income students, and/or students with disabilities and helps them navigate the complexities of college life both in and out of the classroom. The program strives to help students graduate from college and successfully transfer and complete a Bachelor's degree.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Serve as a professional tutor to a diverse group of community college students participating in the TRIO SSS program.
* Host the TRIO SSS Study Hall program.
* Aid students in developing both conceptual and practical approaches, as well as study skills to increase academic development and success.
* Tutor students in academic concepts and/or course material; integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
* Provide personalized attention in the areas of writing, grammar, paper structure, proper citations and utilizing references for academic papers, research basics, framing, understanding plagiarism, and general writing skills at both developmental education and college level coursework.
* Assist with writing elements across multiple disciplines such as history, sociology, philosophy, business, and various other subjects and with essays for non-academic based items such as scholarship essays or admissions essays.
* Participate in professional development sessions and program meetings as needed.
* Act in a professional manner and be sensitive to and respectful of the student's learning and, if appropriate, personal needs.
* Be prepared and on time for each tutoring session, including but not limited to one-to-one, drop-in, group, or virtual tutoring formats.
* Work with the tutee to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student's individual needs and encourages academic development and success.
* Document all tutoring sessions in department's record keeping system, such as EAB Navigate 360.
* Maintain current knowledge of TRIO regulations, higher education trends, and student success best practices through professional development and training.
* Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
NOTE:
Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.
* Minimum of a Master's degree in Education, English Literature, English Composition or other field related to tutoring.
* Effective communication skills and the ability to explain concepts to others clearly.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications and Zoom.
* The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Professional experience working with Banner Student Information Systems, Degree Works, EAB Navigate 360, and Maxient.
* Demonstrated experience working in higher education, with a preference for experience working at a community college.
* Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English, with a preference for American Sign Language (ASL), Spanish, or Portuguese.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Ability:
Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight.
Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors:
Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
