Position: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

Full and Part-Time, Per Diem Positions Available

  • $3000 Signing Bonus (if licensed)

  • Range: $52,015 to $88,475
  • * salaries vary based on education, licensure, additional COMS certification and relevant experience
About Us

Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults, and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, students’ homes, and their communities.

We are a supportive professional vision services team that will guide, mentor and supervise new or experienced Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments. TVI students who are excelling in their graduate university TVI preparation programs are welcome to apply!

Responsibilities
  • Conduct functional vision and learning media assessments in compliance with DESE/IDEA.
  • Interpret medical reports and contribute to IEP goals, accommodations, and instructional strategies.
  • Recommend and coordinate specialized evaluations, assistive technology, and resources.
  • Consult with staff and families on assessments, modifications, testing accommodations, and vocational planning.
  • Procure and develop accessible materials (braille, enlarged/recorded text, tactile symbols) and recommend classroom modifications.
  • Provide instruction in assistive technology and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) areas.
  • Train and support teams and families to promote student independence and access.
  • Participate in transition planning, maintain required documentation, attend IEP meetings, and serve as liaison to Carroll Center.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current Massachusetts DESE licensure (or eligibility) in Visual Impairment is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, and oral/written communication skills are essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of current mainstream and adaptive technologies and resources for teaching both low vision and non-visual learners in general and special education environments is required.
  • Ability to implement state and federal special education regulations, while incorporating the ‘best practice’ principles of the National Agenda and the Expanded Core Curriculum to meet the individual and unique needs of all students.
  • Driver’s license (preferred) with a good driving record.
