The College of the Holy Cross seeks a cellist to join the Music Department's roster of instrumental and vocal instructors. Lesson instructors are at-will employees and are compensated $1000/semester per student for 10 one-hour lessons and $500/semester per student for 10 one-half-hour lessons. Training for lesson instructors. The position reports to the Chair of the music department.
Major Areas of Responsibility- Teach individual cello lessons, as needed, to music majors and non-majors.
- Based on the successful candidate's qualification, possible additional ad hoc duties, for which the lesson instructor would receive additional compensation, might include participating in auditions, juries, and coachings.
- Master's Degree in Music Performance
- 3-5 years experience teaching cello lessons to college-age students
- Experience in professional performance activities
- Willingness to teach all levels of students from beginning to advanced
- Willingness to work with ensemble directors in order to help support student participation in ensembles.
- Evidence of being capable of creating an inspiring and productive teaching environment
- Willingness and ability to accommodate students' needs of individual learning styles
- Ability to teach students who enroll in Music 331/332 or 431/432 for a full credit and a letter grade, in coordination with the Chair of the Department
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion in repertory, for example, music composed by women, historically and geographically underrepresented identity groups, and unfamiliar musics (old and new)
- Commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching
- Evidence of an active performance schedule
- Interest and/or experience in teaching cello in a liberal arts context
- Superb musicianship
- Understands, values, and respects diversity as an individual, in a team, and within groups while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment
- Good communications skills
- Dependability
This is a part-time opportunity. Lesson instructors are at-will employees and are compensated $1000/semester per student for 10 one-hour lessons and $500/semester per student for 10 one-half-hour lessons. For the first semester only, candidates will be paid for a minimum of three students whether or not three students enroll. Candidates are also eligible, by application and pending budgetary approval, to earn additional income by offering masterclasses, recitals, or serving as ringers in other campus ensembles as needed.
All lessons will take place in person, though music lesson instructors are normally able to arrange their lessons into one or two morning/afternoons of teaching per week.
The successful applicant will be required to complete Holy Cross's Boundary training.
