Utility Technician
Overview
Under general supervision, inspect, clean, maintain and repair high‑pressure boilers and medical waste incinerators; overhaul turbo generators on a scheduled basis to ensure compliance with state regulations and insurance requirements. Perform routine maintenance on ancillary equipment such as pumps, planetary gear systems, wet‑ash removal systems, and order necessary parts. Inspect and maintain electronic control devices such as servo drives, syncros, DCS combustion systems, and related controls.
Duties may include Power Plant Operating Engineer, Boiler Operator and/or Autoclave Operator responsibilities as needed.
- Calibrate temperature monitors, transmitters, air pollution equipment and HVAC energy management controls.
- Repair or replace DCS equipment powered by 4‑20 mA analog inputs and maintain analog and digital I/O.
- Maintain connecting wiring for peer‑to‑peer communications, termination board switch locations, strategic loop controllers, and reprogram process controllers.
- Use terminal to prepare and maintain preventive maintenance schedules, reports and spreadsheets.
- Operate lathes, milling machines, grinders, presses and saws to manufacture parts as necessary.
- Perform boiler, incinerator or power plant operating engineer functions to fill in for staff shortages.
- Handle general maintenance of boiler room, generating plant and autoclave room, including painting, sweeping and minor repairs.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to two years of training in advanced electronic controls and boiler operations.
- Knowledge of maintenance specifications, thermodynamics of steam, generator principles, air pollution regulations, burner management and electronic control devices.
- Proficiency in diagnosing problems and repairing equipment.
- Computer skills with related keyboard proficiency.
- Three to five years of related experience with a boiler operator license from the City of Providence.
- Must obtain Stationary Operating Engineer’s License from the City of Providence within one year in this job.
Work around generators and boilers with exposure to noise, heat, steam, asbestos, caustic chemicals, medical waste, fuel, water residue and odors. Hazards minimized by adherence to established operating and safety precautions.
Pay Range$35.02 – $43.96 per hour.
