Through safety-net services and asset building solutions, Worcester Community Action Council (WCAC) creates economic mobility opportunities for tens of thousands of people annually through programs such as energy assistance, early education and care, financial empowerment, positive youth development, and career pathways. WCAC serves 45 towns in Central and South-Central Massachusetts with offices located in Worcester, Southbridge, Webster, and East Brookfield.

Position

Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic and operational leadership for all financial functions of a $35+ million nonprofit organization, overseeing financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, general ledger management, internal accounting controls, and compliance policies. Long-range business planning is a core and ongoing responsibility of this role. As a key member of the Senior Management Team, the CFO serves as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) across business systems, financial policies and procedures, and grant contract management and compliance.

The CFO also plays an active role in advancing WCAC's strategic plan objectives — particularly its commitment to being a model employer and building the timely, relevant infrastructure needed to support staff and clients. In partnership with the CEO and Board of Directors, the CFO works through the Audit Finance Committee to offer strategic recommendations on the management, sustainability, and growth of WCAC's cash assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • CPA Preferred.
  • Seven years of senior level financial management experience, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with federal and state financial reporting for a non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation required with the ability to present information in a variety of ways.
  • Experience managing payroll, grant funding, AP/AR, and IT services with a strong aptitude for technology.
  • Deep understanding and Experience with federal OMB circulars and guidelines essential to success.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required. Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new software, databases, and technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to people at all levels of an organization.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, and ability to communicate complex processes with consistency and fidelity.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate relevant financial trends, providing sound recommendations to senior management including the identification of potential risks and opportunities.
  • Sound technical skills, good judgment, and a strong operational focus.
  • Excellent negotiation skills with experience in procurement and contracting.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills inclusive of accounting staff and grants contracts staff.
