Purpose of Position

To direct, coordinate, market, and oversee all aspects of Blood Transfusion Services and donor collection programs throughout Cape Cod Hospital Laboratory and Cape Cod Healthcare facilities.

Responsibilities

Ensure the development, coordination, implementation, and standardization of all policies, procedures, and practices of Blood Bank operations. Provide services that meet all patient needs in accordance with accepted standards.

Oversee all operations of the Blood Donor Center and Program, constantly seek marketing and expansion opportunities, increase collections through internal databases, external drives and mobile collections, and reduce dependency on purchased blood to lower costs.

Supervise the performance of procedures to obtain and provide data and blood products for diagnosis and treatment, including:

Procedures ensuring compatible blood (blood typing, antibody screening and identification, cross matching, etc.)
Preparation and dispensing of blood products for transfusion
Serologic testing for disease diagnosis and treatment
Current Q.C. and instrument calibration policies and procedures
Instrument troubleshooting and preventive maintenance as required
Accurate transcription of completed test data for reporting

Plan, organize, and provide services for assigned sections of the Blood Bank and Donor Center:

Create and maintain employee scheduling per contract language.
Order and control supplies and equipment; monitor maintenance and repair.
Coordinate and monitor quality control activities.
Evaluate quality and timeliness of test results reporting.
Manage all aspects of blood donation, including marketing and donor recruitment.
Oversee the set-up and maintenance of fixed off-site and mobile collections.
Provide Blood Bank and Serology testing for the organization.

Maintain technical competency in the donor center and assist staff:

Obtain health histories and perform physical exams.
Phlebotomize patients and donors.
Prepare and label blood components and samples for testing.
Accurately transcribe test data and perform clerical functions.
Recruit donors (autologous and homologous).
Maintain inventory of supplies.
Implement process improvement measures for quality and efficiency.
Assist pathologists with quality control, instrument maintenance, and new methodology development.
Review donor paperwork for accuracy and completeness.

Orient new hires, oversee staff training, and evaluate performance per departmental guidelines.

Serve as a technical reference for blood bank, donor room, and hospital staff.

Recommend, develop, and maintain quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement programs.

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of CAP, AABB, and FDA standards for compliance.

Safeguard confidential information and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Maintain harmonious and cooperative relations with employees, medical staff, patients, and guests; contribute to the Laboratory team’s professional service.

Pursue professional growth through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay abreast of field trends.

Keep current with departmental and hospital policies, including fire and disaster plans.

Perform additional duties as assigned or requested.

Ensure satisfaction of all department service users, both internal and external; seek continual customer service improvement.

Participate in the Laboratory’s QA program, developing area monitors and process improvement activities.

Provide input on operating and capital equipment budgets; manage within budget and submit monthly variance reports.

Interview applicants and recommend hires.

Maintain effective communication with staff, physicians, and other hospital personnel or external laboratory service providers.

Conduct monthly sectional staff meetings and record minutes.

Maintain section reports and records per regulatory agency requirements.

Deliver service excellence to patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co‑workers.

Challenge current practices, identify improvement opportunities, present recommendations, and support the organization’s culture of continuous improvement.
