Summary

Under the technical supervision of a pathologist, and administrative supervision of the Administrative Laboratory Director, performs a wide variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine and body fluids samples as requisitioned by a physician, to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, following established standards and practices.

  • Follows protocols for quality‑control procedures, ensuring proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
  • Recognizes instrument malfunction and out‑of‑control test results, taking corrective action.
  • Ensures specimens are properly labeled, collected, received, stored, and discarded in accordance with policy.
  • Assembles supplies and equipment, maintaining cleanliness of equipment and the work area.
Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of experience preferred, with successful rotation through all clinical laboratory departments or equivalent.
  • Three months of clinical training and on‑the‑job training needed to become familiar with hospital policies and become proficient in all job requirements.
  • Possess knowledge of established protocols and the ability to work independently within those protocols.
  • Demonstrated understanding of safety issues and ability to adhere to established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Capable of completing proficiency and competency checks and reading and signing new and revised policies and procedures promptly.
  • Valid certification by a recognized agency preferred (e.g., ASCP).
Education
  • Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
  • High‑school graduate or equivalent with successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course (at least 50 weeks) and holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
  • Certification by ASCP or another acceptable certification agency preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • 75% or more: stand/walk, talk or hear, exposure to blood‑borne pathogens.
  • 50–75%: exposure to infections from disease‑bearing specimens, exposure to infectious/contagious diseases.
  • 25–50%: stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift up to 10 lbs; exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, dust or other irritants, cleaning agents/chemicals; exposure to hot or noisy equipment.
  • Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus.
Pay Range

$24.90 – $36.47
